Guide Button Does Not Open Steam Overlay - Again

ISSUE: Pressing Xbox button (aka Guide in Steam Input) does not open Steam Overlay in games after launching game from Steam running in large mode.

OS: Windows 10 21H2

REPRODUCE BY: start Steam game from Steam running in large mode and try to open Steam overlay by pressing Xbox button
Expected: Steam overlay should open
Outcome: Nothing happens

Additional Info: Steam controller configs and Steam Input is working i.e. Pressing Xbox button on desktop focuses Steam. Have tried MS Xbox One controller Thrustmaster eSwapX Pro controller. The Steam notification saying on screen overlay is accessible through shift + tab shows and kb shift + tab does open Steam overlay. The kb shortcut mapped to xbox button is broken. No other apps are set to use xbox button. Steam Input Global chord shortcuts work like expected.

WORKAROUND: Enabling the option in settings for "Use the Big Picture overlay when using Steam Input enabled controller" at least gives access to controller related options in game.

Can repo with yesterdays and todays Steam for windows client version 1663795408 and 1663887315

All still dated 21 Sep build date which is something else needing fixed as changelog announcements do not match changelog date and no version number is confirmed in changelogs.

Steam client beta build 1666402581 21/10/2022 now has working Steam Overlay in large mode without the need to enable the "Use the Big Picture overlay when using Steam Input enabled controller" option.

Havent tested on stable branch.

Steam Overlay has been broken again in games using latest beta builds running in Large mode.

Bumping this. When using steam link through my NVIDIA shield the steam overlay no longer works. Have double and triple checked settings.

This is not affecting steam link through iOS.

I suspect the new -gamepadui using "guide" aka xbox button to open settings menu conflicts with Large mode steam overlay in game. Regardless kb shortcut (shift + tab) for steam overlay is working so only the shift + tab kb shortcut mapped to guide button on controller is broken. Can see kb button prompts appear in RIDE 4 game on release of guide button.

For me is the opposite way, I'm using a generic controller via android and steam link, before the gamepadui thing all the button worked perfectly, now when I press select button the overlay opens.
Tried the beta version before the gamepadui went stable and now that is a stable have the same issue on both branches, there is no way I can change that.

with latest steam beta running with -gamepadui xbox extended feature driver enabled and steam running in large mode steam overlay still would not open like expected with controllerJust found in the controller mapping what look likes gyro settings (the infinity symbol) to shift + tab makes Guide button open legacy steam overlay in game like expected and without whatever "chord" config was set. Just pressing Guide button instantly opens steam overlay but doesnt if that global chord short cut is not set to suit windows pc.

Thanks to this older thread https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/3/3006682619653175326/#c3123786356712221800 the video shared there i can see Steam Input should show appropriate controller version with Share button and am sure am having issues with Guide and Share buttons because Steam Input is not showing correct controller according to what is being detected.

Additionally nobody told me i should be using View (aka select) button to open Steam Overlay when using -gamepadui or that using -gamepadui shows mapping box for share button.

-gamepadui was working with my custyomised Big Picture Config but today Guide button is working more like tab or something it jumps several spaces instead of just opening -gamepadui menu

Guide button is now working again for gen 2 xbox one controller (MS xbox one) and gen 3 xbox one controller (Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro).

Xbox Accessories app updated firmware on gen 2 xbox one controller from 4.8.1923.0 to 5.15.3168.0

Guide button started working again last night before todays update ( https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/announcements/detail/3659771788271315337 ) was available for steam on windows. I went out of my way to undo my workarounds to see if issue was present after updating firmware on gen 2 xbox one controller and Guide button was working with just default chord button shortcut config. Could reproduce working Guide button with gen 3 controller too.

EDIT: Guide button is working for focusing steam, opening big picture and opening newbigpicture settings which it wasnt previously; however legacy Steam Overlay still does not open in game without applying the workaround described in post #11 above.

This is happening again as of 4/5/23 beta. The option seems to have been stripped out of settings -> in-game as well. Hopefully to add in support for the new big picture overlay?
