Xbox Series X Controller Support
I see the information for the latest Steam Beta update mention that it should fix an error with Steam recognizing the newest Xbox controller - which was news to me, because I've been having a different error and thought there just was no support for it yet.

If I plug it in via wire, it thinks it's an Xbox One controller and works well enough (just no share button support), but I can't get it to recognize I have a controller hooked up at all when it's connected via Bluetooth. Is that normal, and wireless pairing isn't supported for Xbox Series X controllers yet? Even my DualSense works wirelessly now, and my Xbox One controller still does.

Okay I looked into it more windows 10 doesn't recognize it as an xbox controller but recognizes it as Xinput device. Some people saying plug it in and goto xbox accessories app in windows 10.

But you could just simply install the driver for this one. It does not use the original Xbox One Controller driver. Once you find it in Human Interface Devices tab. Locate Xinput Compatible device assuming your connected in wireless/bluetooth mode. update it manually untick the compatible devices box assuming it will show you the xbox drivers select the Xbox Wireless Controller Driver and install then restart.

You might need to follow some of the troubleshooting steps from Microsoft's support page for the controllers:

Thank you both for the advice! I'm sorry to say I stopped checking the thread by the time you replied, wrongly assuming I'd get an email if there was a comment.

That page from Microsoft does describe my issues - no recognition by Steam or button input when connected via Bluetooth - but my computer says I'm fully up to date (no optional updates either) and I'd already used the Xbox Accessories app to update my controller. It says no new updates are available. My OS version is 20H2 and build is 19042.630, so I believe that should be enough. Yet still, it's connected via Bluetooth right now and absolutely nothing on my computer seems to be able to use it.

Under Human Interface Devices in the Device Manager, there is no listing of an "XInput Compatible Device." It's a long list, but I tested the ones that sounded right ("HID-compliant game controller," "Microsoft Hardware Bluetooth Device," and "Microsoft Input Configuration Device") and it said "The best drivers for your device are already installed" about all of them.

Any other ideas?

Never mind! Another Microsoft troubleshooting page recommended I unpair the controller by removing it as a device from my computer, then re-pairing, and now it works! Steam instantly popped up saying an Xbox One controller had been connected. I should have thought to try that myself. If anyone else comes to this page with my problem, make sure you try that!
