Wait i found other solution. you need to go one of your friends' profile, click to send message in their profile, then press that refresh button on chat error. should be fixed but if u close the dm it goes back to error again and you have to do that process again

So here are two possible fixes. Sign out of your friends list, then without clicking online first like normally just click the top option where it says ( View friends list 14 online ) or something along those lines, then a window will pop up for you to sign in. When I did it this way vs just clicking from offline to online it worked. Option two is get in contact with a friend and ask him to msg you, this helped as well. These two options may not be permanent fixes for the glitch, but so far so good on my end from doing them.
