No idea if cleaning the caches or whatever it is people suggest for Steam sometimes help or else maybe it's worth removing all except Steamapps and Userdata (?), maybe put a fresh downloaded Steam.exe into the folder or simply rerun the one you already have and let it reinstall?
Or you could just uninstall and reinstall Steam but that's not all that attractive.
I'm somewhat unsure about what I wrote above. If I were to do it myself I'd put more research into it just to be sure but I have personally let Steam redownload itself and I've tried to save stuff like my screenshots and games and I think it's those two one want to keep around for that. I can't give any warranty for what you get to keep or the risk of it though since this is just from memory and not some sort of official advice. I don't know how Steam/Valve explains how it should be reinstalled but that's about what I would do to hopefully get to keep the data I want to keep yet get Steam reinstalled in case it's messed up somehow. Do you use any alternative user interface scaling in Windows or something?
- I renamed G:\Steam\steam\cached
- Killed all Steam processes.
- Started steam.
- A new cached folder was created.
Steam funnily enough updated but 'About Steam' still shows the version date and numbers as specified in my original post.
The problem is solved now.
Cheers for pointing me into a direction I didn't think of.
