STEAM won't detect my Driving Force GT Wheel Controller
Steam will detect my GamePad, but not Wheel Controller anymore. Is anyone having the same controller issues?

What are your computer & wheel specs?
Drivers up to date?
PatchMan2112 May 21, 2018 @ 4:57pm
Yes... fully updated. Steam used to detect it, I spent many hours playing Dirt3 and Grid 2. Somehow it is now an unsupported device?

Windows, Linux or Apple/Mac? & what edition/version?
+ What brand & model of wheel controler?

Is the wheel a DirectInput device or Xinput? Is the wheel detected in games or not?

2016 Windows 10 gaming rig. Yes, the 2010 Logitech Driving Force GT worked with Dirt, Grid, NFS all, and the classic Mafia w this Rig & on my older XPS 720 w Windows XP/Vista Ultimate. This wheel works with all of my "non-Steam" driving games as well. My only problem is using it with my Steam games.

Can you try making sure you have Steam Input Generic Gamepad support unchecked? Historically Steam has always ignored opening racing wheels because they tend to cause tons of unintended inputs if you treat them as a controller. When Generic Gamepad support is enabled all DirectInput devices will get blocked so your racing wheel would end up getting blocked in-game.

Thanks for help, I'm able to get it to work w Dirt3 and Grid2 by doing that(controller button layout don't save). But, still having problem w GridAutosport & ProjectCars.

The device priority settings are missing in recent steam client beta builds prevent us from setting wheel to number one priority, especially if other controllers are connected.

You should be able to save controller registered to your steam account and be able to define button layout.

Great to see some feedback from Valve developer.

Steering wheel support in Steam Input definitely needs some love from Valve developers though appreciate what the good developer here has explained as contributing factor, however steering wheel support in Steam Input definitely needs some love.

My dpad on Thrustmaster wheel has not worked in Steam Big Picture (after configuring Steam Input for controllers and controllers for Steam Input) for months.

Have been trying to get other steering wheel users to make use of my workarounds but most folks can not reproduce, and yet I continue to be able too do so and continue to struggle too use my wheel. Things have gotten much worse recently, last couple of months. Nothing new, just all the old bugs are manifesting themselves much more frequently.

A lot of things are contributing too low class citizenship of steering wheels in steam input. Assetto Corsa seems most problematic for my Thrustmaster wheel. I need to set steering, throttle, brake, clutch and gear shift every time I launch Assetto Corsa.

I really do think Valve devs can help with this more than game devs.

Could companies like Logitech,GT, and Thrustmaster provide drivers through steam store too help steering wheel users use their wheels in driving games when using modern day Steam client builds easier?

Making sure "generic gamepad" configs are switched off makes no (apparent) difference to how Steam Input handles steering wheels or how games handle steering wheels.

For Thrustmaster wheel I usually have that setting enabled since the dinput buttons (PS) are detected as "generic gamepad" and not PlayStation type controller as there is no joysticks or triggers. I can define layout just fine, just do not set any axis for joystick and make sure button layout matches on screen prompts as much as possible.

@PatchMan2112

Try unplugging your wheeel and restart steam client client in large mode on desktop, connect your wheel and then open big picture to check controller settings. Your wheel buttons should be detected as controller, but doing this workarounds Steam Input bugs specific to Big Picture not detecting controllers like expected.

You may see your wheel detected just as Xbox controller or generic gamepad and will have no button lagout assigned until you define layout. This is another Steam Input bug.

After defining layout you should be able to use dpad on wheel (if you have) but I know I don't because of yet another Steam Input bug.

If you go to game entry in library using big picture you should be able to set steering wheel to number one priority so that your wheel will work in game. This is (usually) important when more than one controller is connected. But we can not easily or reliably set device priority because of another Steam Input bug.

Using PS button on Thrustmaster wheel during a session in Assetto Corsa opens steam overlay (just like expecetd/configured) and shows three unknown controllers and one Xbox controller in device priority section. I know the Xbox controller is shield controller. But what that in game overlay shows perfectly illustrates is just how FUBAR Steam Input really is concerning the handling of steering wheels just now in current steam client beta.

Screenie incoming!

So after following what is suggested I have two controllers listed in controller settings, one is named Shield Controller v1.04 which is a xinput device when it has proper windows drivers but is really an android controller connected to android streaming client and the the other is named Thrustmaster T500 RS Buttons, which is really a dinput device mapped as if it were a xinput device when Steam Input is configured to apply Xbox configs to that device.

I can see no way of setting priority (like until recently) before launching ga e other than evidence of broken support of or provision of broken software. The evidence that Steam Input is broken is easily seen after launching game from Big Picture and PS button (mapped to "Guide" button thanks to Steam Input) to bring up steam overlay in game.

This behaviour changed slightly in most recent steam client beta update. This is evidence Steam Input and how it handles steering wheels is bug ridden, at the expense of adding better support for android controllers!.

Steam Input has been a mess since CES 2018 and have been sharing workarounds for the associated steering wheel bugs for more than two years now.

All these bugs that are associated with steering wheels i am trying relate tothis thread are actually more than two years old. I have made guides for about half a dozen steam games for setting Steam Input for controller, Steam Input for games and controllers for games, just so steering wheels can work like expected but recent Steam client updates are making it even more difficult too use steering wheels at all. Or i should say harder to use Steam client at all.

SteamOS dependence on Big Picture is why I stopped using Steam OS.

SteamVR dependence on Big Picture together with all the steering wheel bugs are why I do not use SteamVR or Big Picture.

GeForce Now Free Beta on Shield's dependence on Big Picture together with with wiping all my Steam Input configuration changes every time a new streaming session is started is exactly why I hate GFN Free Beta on Shield

All of this is a regal mess. Before solutions too problems can be found, the problem/s have to be acknowledged. Anybody who has used a steering wheel who says, "works perfect for me" simply has Steam Input switched completely off. Which is growing trend by game devs and gamers alike are all saying "switching Steam Input off, fixes that"

Steering wheels work fine without steam client.

Steering wheels used to work much better with Steam Input enabled two years ago than they do today. I used to start thinking big picture is not so bad about a year ago when i was using dpad on steering wheel to navigate Big Picture and launch games with VR headset on.

Seeing steering wheels behave so badly in Steam client today just really frustrates me.

Over the last few years I have spent more time trying to get wheel and pedals in driving games working at all than I have spent driving. All because of bugs in Steam Input.

go to "big screen" . then chose which game you want to play. "game settings- steam input-controller settings. then chose "global settings (none)"
this worked for me. i hope it works for you guys.
i translated that from my turkish steam interface.

wait steam VR, never used it, any other help?
Steam Input is undergoing massive changes as Valve add support for the controls on Steam Deck.
These changes mean Steam Input no longer recognises controllers dependent on third party proprietary drivers so no controller is ever detected in Steams controller settings.
To make steering wheel and pedals work in Steam games just make sure wheel and pedals are seen by windows (or whatever operating system you choose to use) like expected and make sure Steam Input is switched off for game in Steam library before launching it.

So wheel and pedals should just work in Steam games that support wheel and pedals but we can no longer set wheel and wheel base buttons as a controller in Steam controller settings so we can use wheel and wheel base buttons to navigate Steam Big Picture outwith games.
A Feature Request is open to try and help motivate Valve to bring back those Steam Input features for non Steam Deck users, which can be found at
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/1/3482994087425070630/

This thread helps show whenever Valve add support to Steam Input for new controller, it causes issues for other gamers using other controller types.
