[Resolved] Xbox Controllers - Guide Button Does Not Open Steam Overlay
On both Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers, the guide button won't open the Steam overlay (or enable Chord controls) regardless of the new Steam focus setting. This did not occur before Xbox became Steam Controllers in this update, the guide buttons worked fine.

OS is Windows 10, and Game DVR is disabled in the Xbox app, so I don't know if Windows is hijacking the button or if something else is going on.

The guide button does not work if Xbox Controller Configuration is disabled, either.

Steam Overlay can still be opened via the keyboard shortcut and via a regular Steam Controller

The controllers used were a Logitech F710 and a Powera Spectra Xbox One controller - perhaps the issue is only with third party controllers?

EDIT: To fix this, turning Game DVR off is not sufficient. You must turn ON Game DVR, open it while in a game by pressing Guide, then going to its own settings to disable the Game DVR guide button shortcut. After that Steam will pick up on it.

I want to stop the controller from opening Big Picture Mode every time I turn the power off ion the controller to save battery. I don't use Big Picture Mode. If Steam client is minimized it opens Steam Client Window instead. I don't want the XBox button to do anything with Steam when I am trying to turn the controller off.

You can disable the focusing on Steam from under [Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings]
i cant even open game dvr cuz my pc hardware doesnt support it... so im screwed
There's another fix method out there that you can google for where you set a registry key manually. That should work even if you can't open XboxDVR
My guide button isn't working, and Game DVR settings seem to have changed since this post was written. When I go to the Game DVR section of the Xbox app, it now redirects me to the Windows settings area (Settings -> Gaming -> Game DVR). There doesn't seem to be a single on/off switch for Game DVR anymore. Now, there are two switches: "Record in the background while I'm playing a game" and "record audio when I record a game." Both of these are off.

The game bar can be turned off through Windows settings too, though when I enable it, I can access with Windows + G. There's an option in the Game Bar tab of the Windows settings area to "Open game bar using this button on a controller" (with an image of the Xbox guide button). I have that disabled. When I enable game bar, I can enable or disable this feature in the Game Bar's settings, and the change carries over to the box in the Windows settings area. When I have it turned on, I can get game bar to open with the guide button. But even when I have it turned off, Steam won't recognize guide button presses, nor will other applications that use the guide button (like RetroArch).

Any ideas? It seems like the Fall Creator's Update changed things, and possibly broke guide button functionality on Xbox One controllers.

just like 'Not-Pierre-Loup' said.. you can turn off gamedvr with the registry editor using the instructions on this link https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6239-DZCB-8600
Hey Glyde,
So, I tried the registry fix. Interestingly, even though "Record in the background while I'm playing a game" was disabled in the new GameDVR settings page, the GameDVR_Enabled registry DWORD still had a value of 1. I set it to 0, and followed the other instructions in the link you sent. After restarting my computer, I checked to make sure the registry changes had stuck, and they had. However, Steam still isn't recognizing guide button presses.

Oh, I should mention, before I did any of the registry edits, I discovered that I was mistaken about RetroArch not recognizing guide button presses. For whatever reason, this seems to be a specifically Steam-related issue. Steam DOES seem to be recognizing that a button is being pressed on my controller -- if I move my mouse in Big Picture mode, a cursor appears, and pressing the guide button makes it disappear. However, the guide button doesn't focus Steam (even though I have that setting enabled), it won't open Big Picture mode, and it won't open the Steam overlay in game.

I tried another controller (a wired PS3 controller, using SCPSERVER, but without the bluetooth drivers, which would have overwritten my normal bluetooth drivers and made my Xbox One controller unable to connect). The guide button is behaving in the same way in Steam.

I had initially thought this to be a variation on this thread's original issue, but perhaps it's a new issue altogether. Should I submit a whole new bug report?

the guide button on the 360 controller does open big picture mode....it works best when the steam client window is selected... it also works opening the overlay while in-game...i dont know about the steam controller though cuz i dont own one. as for the ps3 controller...it should work the same as the 360 cuz the scpserver makes the computer recognize it as a 360 controller...though i dont reccomend using your built in bluetooth/bluetooth adapter to connect your ps3 controller unless you have an extra adapter to connect your other devices, cuz the scpserver's bluetooth driver makes your bluetooth adapter work as a dedicated receiver for your ps3 controller

I posted a fresh topic about it. Hopefully someone will have an answer for why my controllers aren't functioning as intended. This problem is relatively new, I know for a fact that the guide buttons were working about a month ago.
I fixed the issue. Poking around in the base Steam folder, I decided, on a whim, to move xinput1_3.dll and xinput1_4.dll out of the folder. I suspected that they might be corrupt, and wanted to see if Steam replaced them with functioning dlls. This fixed the issue immediately! I reinstalled Steam afterwards, but the installer didn't create those two dlls again. So, if you're having this problem, go ahead and DELETE xinput1_3.dll and xinput1_4.dll from the base Steam folder. They apparently shouldn't be in there at all, I don't know where they came from.

thats good that you got the issue fixed. xinput is a game controller connection method used by nearly all pc controllers. theres another called directinput which is used by consoles such as the ps2 and xbox

If it’s some key/- combination. Then it should work on the desktop overlay too.

If it’s the radial menu, that requires Big Picture Mode.

in the steam settings>in-game make sure this option is ticked "Use the Big Picture Overlay when using a Steam Input enabled controller from the desktop"... but in big picture... make sure the xbox configuration support is enabled
