Controller Registration Every Time at Startup
Hello. I am using the latest Steam beta on Ubutu 16.04. Since a week or so Steam started asking me at startup to register my controller. There were several beta client updates since then, but the issue wasn't fixed. The controller registration is really annoying. And now I can't map controller buttons for Steam in general, there are only the per-game settings which are not really user-friendly (really difficult to map the buttons). Any solutions?

@L4ZYD4NE are you dismissing the popup w/ cancel or hitting submit? Also are you opted-in to Xbox controller support under your Controller Settings? Looking at your cloud files there's only 1 personalization file, whereas for users like Parsnip they have >20 of them.

The popup "Controller Registration" appears only when Steam is started with the "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller ON" and not appears If you turn on after starting Steam. That's annoying I start steam using my controller.

Nope not dismissing it at all, I'm pressing the "Submit" button every time and the "Xbox controller support" box is indeed ticked/selected.

This has been happening to me as well. I've registered my controller 3-4 times and yet this popup happens every time I open steam. I'm using Windows 10 with a USB wired xbox controller which is always plugged in. Thankfully, steam still remembers my controller settings.

Oh, that's fascinating. I only have one local personalization file for the xbox one controller that gets overwritten every time, but it's cloud saving every single one of them individually? That's certainly strange.

new clean windows and steam installation.. 1000 times "submit"... the problem continues... "Controller Registration" is absolutely broken. :steamfacepalm:

please developer rollback this or remove controller registration!

This seems to have been fixed in the beta that rolled out today. I at least have been unable to reproduce it today. Anyone else?

Looking at the changelog, I'm not sure what did it.
Maybe "Fixed a bug where configurations wouldn’t be saved if controller identity couldn’t be established properly" is related?
Though it certainly didn't seem like saving configs was a problem (considering there were 20+ configs in my cloud apparently), it makes logical sense that if a controller identity isn't established properly, Steam would treat it as a new controller and present the registration popup.

Actually took a look at the new logs and found it interesting.

[2017-06-19 21:56:26] Controller has an Invalid or missing unit serial number, setting to '45e-2dd-16c7b36'

[2017-06-19 21:56:26] Opted-in Controller Mask: 2

[2017-06-19 21:56:26] BYieldingRegisterSteamController - Error querying accounts registered to controller after 1 try.

[2017-06-19 21:56:27] BYieldingRegisterSteamController - Error querying accounts registered to controller after 2 try.

Is this just how all xbox one controllers are, or is mine special?

Yup it does seem to be sorted now (YAY), will keep an eye on it.

[2017-06-19 21:56:26] Controller has an Invalid or missing unit serial number, setting to '45e-2dd-16c7b36'
This is normal for all Xinput controllers, DirectInput controllers and 3rd Party PS4 controllers. For Steam Controllers and first Party PS4 controllers there we have a way of reading a unique ID and use that, but for other controllers we make one using the format of: VID-PID-UserID

[2017-06-19 21:56:26] Opted-in Controller Mask: 2
You have opted into Xbox controller support

[2017-06-19 21:56:26] BYieldingRegisterSteamController - Error querying accounts registered to controller after 1 try. [2017-06-19 21:56:27] BYieldingRegisterSteamController - Error querying accounts registered to controller after 2 try.
This is normal if you are on the login screen (you don't have an account yet), otherwise it means there was a issue talking to the server.

Can we have Xbox 360 controllers not show as Steam controllers?
(not having the "Xbox controller support" checked)

Opt in and then out of beta by going to steam client upper left corner and selecting settings...
Then from there goto account...
Then from there look for Beta participatation...
And There you go...
