Do persevere though. Once you get the steps down, making custom followers is quite straightforward. I make all my followers now. Well, sometimes I tweak existing followers too.
Tweaking existing followers can be a good place to start as you don't have to worry about making them work as followers and you can just edit their looks/fighting style/stats/etc. Keep note of your favourite vanilla followers and see what voicetypes are used, what factions they're in, etc. Familiarity is helpful :)
