I decided to add a newcomer band and an established band to this weekly to have a bit of contrast in there.

Bestia Ater is a Death Metal band from Bulgaria.

The debut album grabbed me with its fun guitar riffs and harsh, raspy vocals. because those reminded me a bit of Vital Remains and Sadistic Intent, though they have their own unique style.
There are hints of black metal in the death metal, which helps the band to elevate itself from the generic death metal sound.

Their debut album is quite short, just 25 minutes long and the songs are fast and to the point, making it easy to listen to.
Short albums are a big plus for me as many albums tend to drag on. My favourite songs from the album are "Forneus" and "Div E Sefid", you can check them out below.

I hope Bestia Ater keeps developing their sound. Knowing little about Bulgarian metal bands, I think this band could really help bring attention to the metal scene in Bulgaria.

Cenotaph is a Death Metal Band from Mexico and considered a key band in the Mexican Metal scene, especially known for their debut album. This album featured Daniel Corchado on vocals, who later joined the band Incantation.

Their debut album, The Gloomy Reflection of Our Hidden Sorrows, is considered a classic. There's something special about this release that's hard to describe. While the ideas in the album weren't entirely new at the time and some songs feel a bit long, it's still an amazing record and for me it's a real gem that stands out in the genre. The bass on that album is very prominent as well, a rarity within the genre.

The Gloomy Reflection of Our Hidden Sorrows is one of my favourite Death Metal releases. Looking at Mexico in particular, I consider it the best metal release from there along with Shub Niggurath's Evilness and Darkness Prevails.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of their later work but they've shifted their sound into a more melodic direction I couldn't really get much out of. If the debut is a bit too rough you might want to consider trying out Riding Our Black Oceans instead.

Please give it a try, as its an essential listen for the genre.

Into the Realm (2024)

This week starts with a band that has been blowing up after the release of their first album, with obvious comparisons to early Black Sabbath plus a hearty dose of Jefferson Airplane. The 1970's doom sound is definitely not uncommon, but this particular group puts a lot of effort into the visual aesthetic. The theatrical presence on stage is that of a Dungeons & Dragons party in a 70's pulp fantasy book cover, including a member simply listed as "stage actress" alongside the musicians to work the crowd and reenact the assorted lingerie sword fights from their classically corny music videos. They have quite successfully nailed the whole vibe they're going for, if even at a glance it looks like something of interest then it is definitely worth a click.

Savage Oath

(Heavy / Epic Metal)

Divine Battle (2024)

Something of a neo-trad supergroup, Savage Oath has heavy hitters from Magic Circle and Visigoth bringing some top quality heavy metal right out of the gate. One hella heavy bass 2-track EP last year already threw them pretty high up on the list of quality "epic metal" bands, and the new album this year confirms it by combining the sounds of the members' other bands with some vibes that drift a bit more into Virgin Steele territory at times. They check the boxes - songs about warriors, magic, magic warriors, all those important topics that the subgenre represents. Then just for the hell of it, the last track on Divine Battle goes full acoustic for that extra medieval-esque folklore vibe. As usual if the auto-generated videos end up region locked, the bandcamp link should still allow audio streaming from that site.
