Welcome to Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 61!

IR 61 was a virtual microcosm of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the First World War. With its recruiting area in the Banat region, near the city of Temesvar (now Timisoara, Romania) the 61st drew roughly equal numbers of ethnic Germans, Magyars, and Romanians, as well as an assortment of Poles, Ruthenes, Serbs, and Croats.

The unit served on every major front in Europe at one point or another during the war, including the Balkans, Eastern Front, Italian Front, and even the Western Front during the final months of the war. The men of the 61st fought with valor up until the empire they had sworn to defend ceased to exist.

The Steam Group attempts to emulate the structure of the Austro-Hungarian Army during the First World War, as well as participate in realisms on Steam games such as WW1: Source. Through it all, our goal is to gain an understanding of the soldiers who fought so bravely for "the sick man of Europe" as other powers referred to the declining empire.

Military Awards and Decorations:

Militär Maria Theresien Orden (The Military Order of Maria Theresa)- The highest honor bestowable upon any member of IR 61. Represents extreme devotion to the cause of the Dual Monarchy

Leopold Orden (The Order of Leopold)- Awarded for bravery in action

Orden der Eisernen-Krone (Order of the Iron Crown)- Awarded exclusively to officers, it is similar to the Order of Leopold in it being bestowed for bravery in action

Militär Verdienstkreuz (Military Merit Cross)- Awarded to NCOs, it is similar to the Order of Leopold in it being bestowed for bravery in action

Militär Verdienstmedaille (Military Merit Medal)- Awarded for outstanding service to the Empire in war and peace.

Tapferkeitsmedaille (Medal for Bravery)- Awarded to personnel for combat bravery, it was minted in three classes- Gold, Silver, and Bronze

Karl Truppenkreuz (Karl Troop Cross)- Awarded to all service personnel who served for twelve months and participated in at least one battle.

Verwundetenmedaille (Wound Medal)- Awarded to those who fell ill or were wounded, with a plain ribbon for illness victims and up to five red stripes for wound victims.
