Newer Skin Compiling Conversion Older Build Half-Life 2
Need help trying to get a custom skin to work on an older build of Half-Life 2

(have tried doing several extensively if you take my word for it)

For example, this skin will work on the build I'm currently using, but when I insert the one I am intentionally trying to use (a different reanimation of the default pistol and or a the two handed pistol mod), it will come up with an error symbol. Strange considering I have several other skins that work properly on any engine version aside from the pistol and shotgun in particular. Familiar with decompiling and recompiling and have that working, however no matter what model I try to recompile with the latest version of crowbar (even the default Half-Life 2 pistol that comes with the build) it will always come up with an error symbol. Wondering if there is a special SDK build I am supposed to use other than 2006 and 2007 (it would seem I need 2004) or a special way to compile it with an older Crowbar version / old fashioned way of just using studiomdl.exe. If you know, feel free to assist me.

Have already tried swapping certain files and also changing the model version from 48 to 44 or lower with no success. Hopefully somebody is able to give me a hand.

That is what I've been trying to build it with 2006. This is a release build of Half-Life 2 released in 2004. Simply results in an error. Older models work because they were made with older tools. However am unsure where to start and to what extent it is required (having to extract everything with older tools and then compile it without anything other than command line SDK) There is nothing special about how the model is compiled it is simply Crowbar not being able to make it properly. Should I just try studiomdl.exe by itself in that case?

You might do something wrong. Try calling studiomdl.exe directly, Try pointing to ep1 sdk.

Did some research. Seems Valve as a whole doesn't want people to use the old SDK anymore. Hence the "Can't find steam app user info." that I am seemingly unable to fix unless there is an unofficial legacy SDK that I am able to download

I can confirm, models compiled from ep1 suite work on hl2 build: 12:18:31 Nov 2 2004 (2187)

Regarding to your crash, I had relatively complicated model with face flexes and stuff and no crash. So you need to figure out what exactly causes crashing.

Check for all model files placed on correct path. They should be placed how output path is specified in .qc file relative to mod directory. Moving around is not allowed.

If you work on decompiled materials, you'll probably need to find original sources or ask the author to provide.

Saw this already, and I did all of that. Okay good information thank you I figured as much. The one I'm using is actually earlier than that but it is close enough so appreciate you testing it. It wasn't crashing, it was just producing an error, because it was the wrong model version.

What is this? Already followed the tutorial and have everything required as it stated.

Replaced steam.dll with the one that was in the Steam main folder. Still giving me a logon error is it because I have it installed on a different drive? NEVERMIND EDIT BELOW

So no more logon error, now I just gotta figure out how to decompile / recompile it properly

This is the default model that comes with the build and it compiled successfully. Am sure it's working now just gotta figure out how to get the one I want in there.
