Enhanced Blood Textures & Advanced UV Mapping for Procedural Fluids (VFX) in Unity

Creating realistic blood effects is crucial for immersing players in the gritty and intense world of Silent Lost.

Our latest update introduces procedurally generated blood textures combined with advanced UV mapping techniques to achieve stunning fluid dynamics.




Key Features:

Procedural Blood Texture Generation:

- Utilizes algorithmic methods to create dynamic and varied blood textures.
- Ensures each blood effect feels unique and responsive to in-game actions.

Advanced UV Mapping:

- UV Custom Data: Implemented with tangents, UV2, and Custom 1 (XYZW) channels to provide more control over texture manipulation.
- Dynamic UV Adjustments: Allows for real-time adjustments to blood flow and spread based on environmental interactions.




Implementation Details:

Tangents:

- Enhance the shading and lighting of blood textures, making them appear more three-dimensional and realistic.

UV2 Channel:

- Used for additional texture layering and blending, allowing for complex blood patterns and flows.

Custom 1 (XYZW):

- Stores supplementary data such as velocity and direction vectors, enabling dynamic fluid movement and interactions.

Our fluid system is designed to handle complex interactions between blood and the game environment, ensuring that every splash, pool, and river of blood reacts naturally to the surrounding elements.

Collision Detection:

- Blood interacts realistically with various surfaces and objects, adapting its flow and pooling based on the environment.

Dynamic Procedural Textures:

- Blood textures adjust in real-time, responding to factors like gravity, impact force, and surface type.

Realistic Blood Behaviors:

- Includes different states such as splashes, rivers, pools, and trails, each with unique behaviors and visual characteristics.

To enhance the visceral experience, we've implemented a variety of blood effects that cater to different in-game scenarios.

Blood Splash:

- Captures the immediate aftermath of an impact, with particles dispersing outward for a dramatic effect.

Blood River:

- Simulates flowing blood, creating dynamic streams that follow the game's physics.

Blood Pool:

- Forms static pools that linger on surfaces, adding depth and realism to the environment.

Blood Trails:

- Leaves behind streaks of blood as characters or objects move, enhancing the sense of motion and consequence.

Silent Lost Behind the Scenes #5: Advanced Character Controller & Object Interaction System


Advanced Character Controller - Silent Lost

Our character controller is designed to provide fluid and responsive movement, allowing you to navigate the haunting environments of Silent Lost with ease.

Key Features:

Smooth Movement Transitions: We've implemented seamless transitions between walking, running, crouching, and jumping. The character's speed adjusts dynamically based on your input and stamina levels.

Stamina Management: Running and certain actions consume stamina. You'll need to manage your energy wisely to avoid being vulnerable at crucial moments.

Ground Detection: The controller accurately detects the ground beneath you, adjusting movement and animations accordingly. This includes surface detection for different terrains, which ties into our footstep sound system.




Footstep Sound System with FMOD Integration

To enhance immersion, we've integrated FMOD to handle dynamic footstep sounds based on the surface you're walking on. Each surface type (like wood, stone, or grass) has its unique sound, adding realism to your exploration.

How It Works:

Surface Detection: The character controller detects the tag of the surface you're walking on using raycasts.

Dynamic Sound Playback: Based on the detected surface, the appropriate footstep sound is played using FMOD's event system.

Serialized Surface Events: We can easily add or modify footstep sounds for different surfaces directly in the Unity Editor, thanks to a flexible and editable system.




Object Interaction System

Interaction is a vital part of Silent Lost, and our Object Interaction System allows you to engage with the environment in meaningful ways.

Key Features:

Pickup & Drop Mechanics: You can pick up objects within reach and carry them, adding a layer of strategy to how you navigate obstacles or uncover secrets.

Throwing Objects: Need to create a distraction or clear a path? Throw objects with realistic physics to interact with the environment.

Item Inspection: Examine items closely to find hidden clues or details that might aid your journey.

Inventory Integration: Certain items can be stored in your inventory for later use, making inventory management an essential aspect of gameplay.




Highlighting & Crosshair Dynamics

To enhance the interaction experience, we've added visual cues:

Object Highlighting: Interactable objects are highlighted when you look at them, thanks to a subtle emission effect that draws your attention without breaking immersion.

Dynamic Crosshair: The crosshair changes when pointing at interactable objects, giving immediate feedback on possible actions.

Player Lamp Controller

Navigating dark environments is a staple in horror games, and our Player Lamp Controller ensures you have just the right amount of light—if you can keep it fueled!

Key Features:

Equippable Lamp: Players can equip a lamp that illuminates their surroundings, essential for exploring dark areas.

Fuel Management: The lamp consumes fuel over time. You'll need to find and manage fuel resources to keep the lamp lit.

Fuel Bar UI: A fuel gauge displays your current fuel level, adding tension as it depletes and forcing you to decide when to conserve or use your light source.

Gameplay Tip: Remember, light can be both a friend and a foe. While it helps you see, it might also make you more visible to lurking dangers!
