What's best smd or dmx?

I hope DMX is a newer and better alternative to SMD to creating custom props for HL2 and L4D2

Neither is best. DMX can have flexes built-in, with many options not available with SMD and VTA, but DMX is in Source limited to 3 bones trying to manipulate a vertice, and in Source 2 limited to 4 bones, while SMD is unlimited in that aspect.

But if you'd ask VALVe, they would say DMX if they'd reply.

DMX is required for several of the Source engine's newer facial animation features. It's also faster to export and compile, particularly if your model is very large and has lots of flex shapes.

If you're making simple props you won't notice any difference.
