In today's Japan is manga respected as both an
art and a hobby, and its popularity is enormous in relation to other countries' counterparts. For example, the weekly sales of manganese equivalent to the annual sales of U.S. comics. In contrast to Western culture where comics have no cultural importance, manga seen as an important part of modern Japanese culture. Manga is respected as an art form and as popular literature, even if it does not yet have reached the same level as traditional high culture such as film and music.


Anime (アニメ) is a Japanese loanwords which is short for animation, and describes most types of animation, often with the exception of full-length feature films. In Norway, the word denotes the special character style that has been associated with Japanese animation since the postwar period. It is characterized in that the female characters (and some male) have large eyes and long legs, often longer than the rest of the body, grimaces and facial expressions clearly show what mood the characters are in, and that large excesses are a common tool.
