The time is finally here, and we are thrilled for Heading Out to release today!

This has been a long time coming; we have been working on Heading Out for more than 4 years, surviving the pandemic, and switching publishers in the process. There were times when we had to borrow money to carry on with this project, but we always believed that Heading Out was worth the risk. In the end, we are here, at the finish line, showing you the game that means the world to us and wishing it will mean something special for you too.

We truly can’t wait to hear from each of you about your own journeys through America’s cities and down the highways and backroads. So don't be afraid to leave a comment or contact us directly - especially if you find a bug, we will fix it ASAP.

If you’re new here - welcome! - Heading Out is a part narrative adventure, part roguelite, and part racing game greatly inspired by cult-classic road movies like Thelma & Louise and Vanishing Point (and Two-Lane Blacktop, does anyone remember it?). Choose your route across the USA on an unpredictable thrill ride blending white-knuckle racing, strategy, and storytelling.

Grab the wheel, slam your foot on the gas, and let’s go for a ride. And have a great time playing!

PS: Very small and weird thing to note, but this is how we are. This launch version of Heading Out is version 0.8 instead of your typical 1.0. Why? 'Cause we forgot to change the build number. Oh, the shame!

Unfortunately the game is just not what I was expecting. Heading Out is mostly played from a map view while I was expecting more of a third person driving experience than what it offers. There are also performance issues and some pretty bland storytelling.

Pros:
++Soundtrack is 10/10
+Art style works well
+The narrator has a cool voice

Cons:
-Not a whole lot of driving
-Story choices don't really matter
-Some events do not respect the agency of the player
-Crashes frequently
-Driving segments are over too quickly

4/10, kinda bad. Although this score is below neutral I do want to add that the game has a lot of potential, and if you're into map view games this is definitely a game you want to check out.

Recommended with heavy caveats.

If you want to play a driving/racing game, don't bother. It almost feels like a mini-game, and it's not a tight driving experience.

However, if you like more road-trippy games like Road 96 or Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, this might be a worthwhile pick. There's a film noir artistic direction to it that, to me, was just slightly off the mark, and I didn't care for the "escape your fears!" narrative. That is, however, down to preference.

Still, if you like road trip roguelikes, this might be up your alley.

Okay, how to tell this ...
Bought it with the slight promo the week following it's release. Didn't have big expectations, expected the game to be small.
Well, if you play it the way I did and I'd recommand, yes it's quite short : went from beginning to ending in a day (around 7h-8h). Didn't take long to immerse myself in it, the simple gamplay mixed with the story and the soundtrack are doing the job for you.
Not much expectation before launching the game but extremely positively surprised in the end. (yep, I was wrong, there's good stuff)
If you're a completionist, good luck seeing everything in the game and trying every choices. I'm not ^^.
If you encountered some personal problems in your life, this game might move you a bit, but hang in there and fight*.

No matter what kind of gamer you are, my recommendation : your first playthrough, just immerse yourself in it. Go for the "balanced" difficulty (it's clean in my opinion). If you can, try to answer for yourself, and play it your way*.

* : you'll understand

Stuttering towards point of unplayable?

Hi there, fun approach, love road movies and enjoy it, but had a good run yesterday (on Steam Deck) and around Kansas suddenly very heavy stuttering occured, so I had to quit. I don't know if it was something Steam Deck related or anyone else experiences anything like that?...

WHY CANT YOU CHANGE CONTROLS

i play with a keyboard and mouse and want to change the steering that works best for me -left turn - left mouse button right turn -right mouse button is there any way to change it ? controllers are to small with cubital tunnel cant hold that log my right hand falls asleep...

Muscle Car driving dynamics are ass

Power oversteer, Lift off oversteer, can't even trail brake... How tf am I supposed to go fast if the car doesn't steer with light braking and steers too much when I'm off the gas pedal? It feels like a bunch of story writers who have never played a car video game designed the vehicle dynamics. PLEASE give us the option to tune how the vehicle drives!!!
