What lore behind null automatons, I failed to get the name, if ever explained.

In the games lore the null machines were created by a group called the Machinists. They also built the temples that house the machines, and that behemoth Lamassu you can find wandering around the world map terrorizing humans.

You'll find Machinists books inside their temples which hint at their backstory if you're interested. The Machinists are in part inspired by Assyrian mythology, including the names for their temples and creations.

"null" is a more modern programmer term, meaning empty or missing. So a "Null" machine is a machine that is empty, ie. without a spirit.

To find out where the Machinists went and why they built Lamassu, look for a quest called "Behemoth Hunting Party" which is the associated faction quest for the faction.
