I agree with you some of the lore change is more recent, yeah. The Nautiloid ships were first introduced in Spelljammer, yep. But later editions added things like the Elder Brains, Ilsensine being the Uber-Brain Great Old One they worship in the Far Realms, etc.

Fun fact, but my dice bag used to include a "d10" (and I think most still do). Well a ten sided die is not an actual Platonic solid. It simulates one close enough to be suitably pseudorandom, but ... the primary thing I used to use it for was to roll percentages.

A lot of thief skills used to be in percentage form. Like, your skill at climb walls was (say) 75%. So you would roll two ten-sided dice to see if you got 75 or lower to see if you succeeded.

Now, of course, a 20-sided die can sub for that roll, you simply reduce all numbers by 10 if they are over 10, so if you roll 12-13 that's a 23 or 23%. Also percentages have stopped being how they express most skills in D & D (though they still use them a lot in GURPS and other systems).

The honest reality is that most of the other dice are for rolling damage, hit points based on hit dice, or for ability scores. Because if you want to roll for ability scores, you roll 3 6-sided dice. Etc.

Honestly, you can read most of the 5E OGL rules online, but save yourself even more time and read the BG3 Wiki, as it reduces that down to the ones you need to know for tis particular game.

I believe it. I think theres definitely a concerted effort by the devs to prevent the game from "playing itself". I totally get that and why they would do that.

Its just the way its done though. I don't want artificial stupidity and frustration. I don't want to have to keep pausing mid dogfight to enter the menu to keep stopping the other half of my fleet from walking in front of a bus.

Its counter intuitive, and just invites tedium rather than challenge.

Theres ways to do it and then theres ways not to do it.

I think starsector handles this brilliantly: Certain ships perform/behave like absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with specific pilot personalities and loadouts. Once you understand how the game works (much like how we have to understand X4 to make combat work) you can turn that underperformer into an absolute spectacle who can seriously punch above their weight class.

Thats cool. Thats gratifiying. Sadly, X4 does not know how to do this. lol
