Again, IN THE FIRST YEAR of PS1 versus 18 years of all WotL versions combined.
WotL is just not as popular and not what most people remember.
It's the same reason why the Pixel Remaster games also "cut" all the extra bloat from subsequent versions of the games.
Recreations of the games faithful to the original experience, instead of how some SE desk jockey after the merger said "add a dungeon with no plot relevance and pallet swapped enemies and sell it again for millions... Now who wants Chinese?" before lighting a cigar with a 10k JPY note.

This is actual game preservation.
It runs completely counter to the "lazy port" narrative, which makes some of the criticisms even funnier to me.
They actually went out of their way for these remakes NOT to be lazy ports.
To use a cake-themed analogy again, this is going through your deceased grandma's belongings to find her cake recipe that she made for your birthday when you were 10, rather than heading to the supermarket for a ready-made cake or a box of cake mix.
It's so much deeper than just "more stuff = more gooder".
Or to quote Marie Kondo: "Does this spark joy?"
Well apparently for the people making the decisions, the WotL content didn't pass the Marie Kondo test.

And yes, I am aware that original releases will always have more sales than remakes, but:
Talking 66% (again, if not more) of all sales of FFT are of the PS1 version, 26%-ish is the PSP version, and 7%-ish for the mobile.
And the PS1 version didn't even release in Europe.
Yet it still in 1 year the PS1 veresion sold more copies in only Japan/NA than 18 years of WotL worldwide. On more than 1 console (well, phone isn't really a "console", but you get the point).
