If you've put way bigger fuel tanks than is sane for a particular battleship design, to get an amount of delta-vee that a ship and engine combination really shouldn't support, then yeah, it is. If 70% of the mass of your ship is tanks, and those tanks use valuable things, then yes, refuelling it is not going to be sustainable.

And yeah, the Automatic Designer has got better, but it's still not very smart. What are you designing the ship to do, and what techs do you have access to ?

devs i loved your game but in the kiln when you reach the height and it starts playing that ominous music PLEASE make it so that in a higher ascent difficulty the lava can start rising because that would make it even more PEAK. PLEASE ADD THIS.

...also, choosing the Neon Street Rat background option gives you access to some pointed dialogue choices, even in one of the main storyline quests.

The wealth equality issue theme is touched on several occasions, with sometimes really quirky turns. Like, in the "Eleos Retreat" optional quest hub, etc. etc.

Update - Changed DLSS setting from DLAA to Quality and didn't crash when opening chest. So may be an issue with DLAA
