The developers did. The whole of the DD was meant to be a fight for resources between player groups. They explained this in live streams, prior to the games release. If anyone has a valid reason to be miffed its those who bought the game on that basis.

This issue is of Funcom's making since these were their choices to make and it didn't help with them marketing the game having 'optional PvP' since that wasn't entirely true.

Then, when the PvE content resources were added, instead of you know "Fighting for the high risk, high reward." spots, you guys plopped your butts down in PVE areas and even put your main resource bases in the E squares or D squares, to try and take advantage of it.

Face it, you never wanted to PvP people who wanted to fight back, you simply wanted to grief those that didn't. People can farm, you can tax them and they would roleplay that. Instead, you decide to just "Take it all." which is also fine, but you can't expect people to just take it and keep taking it without leaving, leaving you no one to shove your power against, now can you?

Funcom certainly though so, so they changed the game and if you don't like it? Well, perhaps learn how player retention works. The PvPers were the minority and always were and you actively killed your own game with your toxic attitudes and playstyles and hilariously, the changes to the DD were not brought on by PvE'ers, but Funcom trying to retain people who simply couldn't hack it, or even want to attempt to hack it against the stupidity of how the system was set up to begin with.

I just don't think its right to be maligning people for playing the game they thought they were buying. PvP in these sorts of games isn't always fair, quite often notoriously so, and that sort of asymmetric warfare and spontaneous unscripted sandbox play is largely part of the appeal. Although, I will agree with you that it often gets far too toxic.

I think you are wrong re player retention in this circumstance. Since the changes to the DD the player numbers have dropped off a cliff and many popular games are PvP orientated. Where Funcom seems to have gone wrong is not having a better end game and funnelling players with entirely different play-styles into one zone and later learning that its not possible to please everyone.
