Tim Curry had the potential to be one of the best actors, but was always cast in the stupidest of movies. I'm not sure if that was his intention or not. I know he liked to have fun acting and maybe that's why he was never cast in any actual serious roles, but it's sad because he played the devil really well in Legend from what I remember. Then again I could just have my nostalgia goggles on.

There is so many actors where I wonder how a movie would have turned out had they been cast instead. Like imagine Tim Curry in something like Event Horizon or something. He would make the perfect villain.

Tim Curry is a prime example of a legitimate stage actor that ended up in showbiz - that's why he could act circles around most of his castmates. (It also explains the bombastic overacting sometimes...which is fun in its own right, but it's not 'theatrical.')

Unfortunately, one of the effects of having that background in a place like hollywood is resentment from your peers. I think *that* is why he ended up in mediocre films most of the time: he wasn't part of the "in" crowd because he was an actor who gained celebrity, not a celebrity who learned how to act a little bit. Very typical for the film industry.

Tim Curry's career reminds me of Pete Postlethwaite who was also a damn fine actor with a background in theater. He also had that over acting thing going on. He's actually one of my favorite actors and it's a shame he was cast in so few movies. I also think had Patrick Stewart not originally got on Star Trek his career would have been the same as Tim and Pete.

I honestly like the stage actors and their more exaggerated acting more than regular Hollywood actors who are hyper focused on trying to be a normal person in their roles, but then fail to convey that with their acting, because how they react and respond to situations in the film aren't how normal people would respond in those situations. If anything film should be exaggerated slightly, but there is this obsession with "realism" and "dark and grittiness." Any time I see Tom Hanks play a character I always see him as Tom Hanks. Every time I saw Tim Curry or Pete play a character I could envision them as said character. I'm not sure if my rambling makes sense.
