I think the problem is that the game is constantly connected through the devs servers. So it doesn't really matter if you have the best internet connection since the weakest link is their servers.
Me and my friend has the "connecting to server..."-problem, but only if I try to connect to my friend. If my friend try to connect to me it always works for some reason. I assume it has to do with regional servers or something.
My friend always has almost 100 ping though so there is something else that's wonky.
