Netmarble has me skeptical…

GO LITTLE MAN, GO!!!
My first introduction to Netmarble was their Live Service game: Ni No Kuni:Crossworlds.

It was a beautiful charming game just like this one and was thrilled to try it out and play it.

Everything was perfect. Gameplay, story, characters, design- it really was a Grade-A game.

But soon as I got deeper into the game within days of playing- one thing slowly crept up more and more that was souring the experience: the business model/money grabbing tactics.

Now I get it. This is a business product and they need to make their money I’m fine with that. I’m not fine when their efforts scream louder than one’s enjoyment of said product and gets in the way of it.

Ni No Kuni:Crossworlds was **plagued** with *FOMO* microtransactions. Everytime you hit a milestone in the game, you would receive a popup message to buy special gear that would make your character stronger but had a limited time to get it- say a 24 hour window until it’s gone forever. Their in-game shop had no way other way of buying this kind of offer so if you didn’t get it then you were never able to again- unless you start over with a new character/account.

The amount it cost was usually small, $0.99, $1,99, etc. but overtime it became more and more and you would get these FOMO offers for nearly *everything* in the game.

Now you might think, “Well you can just ignore them and play the game anyways?” not quite. The game was stat-driven and much of the areas/story missions had enemies that were basically stat-checks and if you weren’t strong enough you would be effectively locked out until you did have better gear/stats to clear them but by buying the FOMO offers it made progression feel natural and flawless. While you could ignore it early on in the game, later on the game’s story/progression forced you into open PVP areas with other players that could kill you on the spot if you weren’t strong enough so often Whales who bought all FOMO offers would pick on those who didn’t.

It was just an awful time/experience and unfortunately for me in just one month of playing and buying the FOMO offers I spent around 1k until finally quitting the game.

The game was really fantastic is was some of the best modern MMOs I ever got to play but the business model was suffocating and was sucking my enjoyment away.

I did not even mention their connection to bitcoin cryptocurrency and NTFs that were directly tied to the game to get better gear early on which I personally never touched.

Simply put: Ni No Kuni:Crossworlds was a whale overlord, FOMO-driven MMO that was disguised as a cutesy, near perfectly designed MMO and it makes me sad that this is their way of earning profits from their products.

I have my eye on this game but after NNK:CW, I won’t make the same mistake twice with Netmarble. If I see the same tactics or worse I will be out and the whales can do what they want with whatever little players/bots this game would muster.
