First 200 hours are fantastic.

The player drop off is because the people run out of content after that. The endgame needs expanding and improving.

Many players will return for more story content. They enjoyed the content up until they ran out of it and stopped playing.

None of this is a problem. FFXIV numbers completely drop between major updates too. It's ok to take a break and come back when there's content, you do not have to live in the game.
You should only speak for yourself because you cant say many will return.
Funcom has no plan and this game needs a complete rework to be a good game and this wont happen for sure....

The player dropoff can have many reasons
1. Too many bugs which funcom cant handle and get under control and
soo many hotfix patches in the week.
2. Dupers, Exploiters
3. Stupid weekly
4. Forced pvp to get spice in a normal amount
5. Toxing pvp griefing players
6. absolute missing endcontent which you cant bring in in some months.
7. absolute disappointing roadmap which feels like funcom has no plan what to do
8. This game feels like an alpha and not a finished game

You can dream what you want but funcom lost a lot of players with this game.
Its nothing new.
So many companys sucked with their game because they didnt released a game in a good state.
Mostly bugs, performance issues like in dune, absolute bad content, bad balancing and many more.
Welcome to dune...
Please add "Bad Support" to this list, its totally unbelivable to me that after so many funcom games released the support is still so terrible. You create bug reports and get no info when/if its solved. When you ask the support for any status infos or refund due to the bugs, nothing happens.

The problem is: There seems to be no control, the support can do what they want, there are no consequences closing tickets when the bugs are not solved/refunds done and fortunately the player wont get an info when this happens - that my experience so far.
