I'm not saying the puzzle needs to be physically accurate.

The whole point of this is that there's no reason to expect the solution that works to work, nor is there a good explanation given what we know of why it works, and there's not a very good explanation of how the system you're interacting with works either.

Everything else follows from rules about how the game system works - except this single puzzle that is kinda just...trying something and hoping it works.

It's basically the puzzle equivalent of if the intended way to get to the core of Giant's Deep was really the alternate method of ramming into it really fast instead of the actual solution.
It's really not. You have 3 methods mentioned here of getting to the activated pad. The Nomai lore mentions being careful "around" the warp pads during the 5° activation angle, this tells you that you don't have to be stepping directly on the pad for it to activate. It's also, frankly, using a miniature black hole to warp you, why would you expect to be gravitational oriented onto the pad to walk on its surface in order for you to get sucked into a black hole?
Well, you'd expect to need to walk on the pad to activate it because that's how every other teleporter in the game works. Right?

In fact this very teleporter will fail to activate if you stand on it because you'll get sucked into the air.

Again, frankly, this mechanic is so simple I'm wagering the devs didn't feel the need to explain it, hence the bait of this discussion.
Did you not watch the documentary where they apologized for the puzzle and mentioned that trying to improve hints for it was a long ongoing process?

Bunch of people feeling it's a weaker puzzle in general:
https://www.reddit.com/r/outerwilds/comments/15dk835/the_single_puzzle_that_ruined_the_game_for_me/

I mean, it hardly ruined the game but it's the only puzzle that I failed on implementation which I feel is poor. Every other puzzle I knew the solution would work before I even tried it because the hints were so solid.

This one just kinda works without a solid reason and there's no particular reason to believe any solution will or won't work until just throwing it out there.

Explorer, Shuttle, and Exotic Reduxes +Ground combat and Exocraft Updates
What if Explorers, Shuttles, and Exotics got some touchups.

Personally, out of any of the Starships, I feel that the latter two fill their roles pretty poorly:
-Explorers have the Highest Hyperdrive range, but are mostly overshadowed by Freighters for endgame
-Shuttles are supposed to be the "Balanced" type, but end up failing that role due to Exotics basically doing everything better, and in general, kind of being the worst looking of the Ship types.

So with that in mind, I'd suggest a few changes:
-Explorers are able to scan for stuff such as Archives, Trade outposts, and Minor Settlements by default. And do not need to have a Trade or Combat scanner installed
-Shuttles function more like dropships, being able to have NPCs ride in them and have multiple compartments for storage unlike other starships

Exotics themself do not need that much changes in my opinion, but for them, shuttles, and maybe Explorers. They'd get new proc gen parts.

Simply put, whilst adding new parts to explorers in specific would be something I'd see people pefer not happening. I'd see that working out for Exotics and Shuttles in particular, shuttles are pretty out of date and generally are limited color wise to their detriment. And I'd argue this also applies to the Exotics since we only have them come in a few colors, not unique ones. And most of them are pretty samey (except for the squid exotics).

If I were supposed to make changes, I'd do this:
-Shuttles are now more inline with other ships like Haulers, Explorers and Fighters artstyle wise, looking less cobbled together. As they're more like Dropships now.
-Exotics generally keep their normal parts, but squid exotics get new proc gen parts and the regular exotics are now more diverse, more patterns, new types of wings and front end parts, and perhaps some new types of Exotic bodies. Along with having the same ammount of color diversity as the Squids

I'd also want this to coincide with some changes for Exocraft and Ground combat

We've got Hostile creatures, Vile Brood, sentinels, and the Golems. But I feel having some of the Space Pirates engage in skirmishes so we could have more bounty hunter style Gameplay would also be nice. Maybe in some missions you'll now have to find someone and then either kill them or capture them. Maybe you'll have to function as the bodyguard for someone in your Starship and help escort them to an archive or outpost because they have some valuable intel, or maybe you'll have to defend an depot from space pirates looking to seize it for themselves. I feel that in general, the combat Multitools are kind of pointless, and whilst fighting things like the Sentinels is pretty cool, having to fight another Humanoid is something I'd really want to have in this game. Since the only way we can have that at the moment is through fighting other players.

Exocraft themself also feel less diverse, and I'd wanna see them be treated like starships.

Maybe there's some kind of special colossal archive per planet or system, one archive that is basically a grounded space station, almost close to a city. And this Archive wouldn't just have starship bays, but bays for your own Exocraft. I'd still imagine there'd be Exocraft bays, but they're not needed to unlock the exocraft. And now, Exocraft would have stuff such as Classes, Weapons, and we'd probably be able to even get new Exocraft types. We've not really have new exocraft since the Nautilion and Minotaur, but what if we got a speeder bike, or a walker, or even some kind of AT AT like thingy.

Whilst Space itself in NMS has been pretty updated, I feel the ground at the moment shouldn't be as neglected, and this is what I'd want to see the most. Exocraft kind of feel like they're inferior versions to companions, so in my eyes, I'd wanna see them be treated less like a tool, and more like an "character". Diverse in more ways than just color, similar to freighters, Multitools, and Starships.
