Unsure How I Feel About The Dialogue Focus

While initially it seemed kind of interesting, I felt more and more like the beauty of endless legend, in areas like the art of the world, and the descriptions of everything within it, were being moved to the background if they even got attention at all in order to pave the way for this strange new dialogue system.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the system. I think it is interesting to see your faction leader engage in actual conversation with the chief of a minor faction but I think the old addage: show don’t tell, carries volumes here. In Endless Legend, the minor factions were given detailed descriptions with vibrant little art pieces showing a still life of them in their village. It allowed players to be immersed while also leaving plenty to the imagination and the missions were left as broad strokes of narrative that drew you in just enough to be able to create your own stories with them and your civilization.

In Endless Legend 2, it just doesn’t feel as captivating. Nothing is left to the imagination as every minor faction tells you exactly who and what they are via dialogue with your faction leader. They then immediately give you a proposal that usually runs along the lines of “you know there is this one thing you could do for me” for a mission that your faction leader accepts and then you pacify the village. Theres no art, no vivid descriptions, just some simple text and a name before their leader and yours have a generic 2-3 sentence long exchange of npc questgiving and acceptance. To the game’s credit the leaders do look fantastic but having the same dialogue exchanges with the same characters that aren’t your own, and the same few missions per race every time, while not really having a lot of actual diversity or creativity shown in those interactions/encounters, is in my opinion a step backwards from the first game.

Perhaps some of my qualms are the result of the game being in a demo version. For all we know there could be plenty of art and more fleshed out descriptions in the early access release of the game and perhaps even more to come over time as they develop it after. That said, I think if I had to cast my vote on which system I preferred, I would choose a system more like the 1st game where the focus was on the world and the beautiful and rich lore it held that you as a player interact with via your civilization as opposed to this iteration that focuses on specific named characters you unlock and their personal stories which you have little to no hand in creating or controlling except to choose which reward you want on occasion.
