Is this game worth getting? Curious because of mixed reviews.

It is more than worth it and don't read all those hate reviews, many of them are not justified or about something which has nothing to do with the game (cultural misunderstanding) But about the game, it is a good dark souls one, if you liked lords of the fallen for instance, it is very nice. And keep going on, because the game is getting better and better and is not easy at the begining. it is more than worth it, it s one of the best dark'souls game of this year atm.

Yes, if you intentionally try to lose, then I guess you can force yourself into a box that would be hard to get out of. This is ridiculously unlikely with default settings. Even Deathworld settings are winnable if one has the will (and skills).

Default settings are designed to be the "easy" playthrough, and then you increase the difficulty on your next playthroughs. Lowering the difficulty below the easy default will deactivate achievements, but perhaps useful if a new player is still struggling with enemies and still needs to learn the basics of the game.

The main thing to know about biters: their attacks are triggered by their bases absorbing your pollution. Use the pollution overlay on the Map view to see your pollution cloud. Another tip, look at the production/consumption graphs, specifically the Pollution tab: if you see biter/spawner nests "consuming" pollution, then attacks are imminent. If you see biter/spawner nests consuming pollution in the graphs, but you do not see them in the Map view, then there is a hidden enemy base that has expanded into your pollution covered area: go on a field expedition to find it, and I recommend setting up Radar outposts to keep active scans over the Map covered by your pollution cloud.

You now have all the intel to know when and why attacks are coming -- and the player must do something about the problem (I recommend getting a tank with cannon shells as soon as possible and you put the biters on the defensive).
