It was the late 80's. When I was a wee lad I had the NES version of Metal Gear, and Snakes Revenge. Snakes Revenge is entirely non canon, but isn't a bad game from what I remember. The whole Metal Gear story to me was unremarkable at the time, but I was 5 years old and didn't understand much of what was happening.

I remember the first time I played MGS it was in a funcoland. Back when they'd let people loiter in the store and play the games on display. The brightness on the TV was turned down so low that I couldn't even tell what was really happening, and I didn't even know what I was playing. I just picked up the controller and started trying to play it. I remember dying a lot and hearing the characters screaming "Snaaaaaaaake!" and thought it was a little unnerving.

Couple weeks later I rented the game, not realizing it was that game I had played before in the store. I thought to myself "Oh hey Metal Gear was a game I played as a kid, they must be reviving the series." I quickly realized that it was what I was playing in the store that day.

Was one of the best damn games I had ever played. I didn't even have a memory card at the time so I couldn't save the game, had to finish it in one sitting. It's probably my favorite series of all time.
