Depends on the scenario of course, but in A New Home, my order for the first ~10 days is (I don´t know the exact upgrade names, but it should still be obvious):
-Faster Gathering from piles/gathering posts
-Improved Hunters Huts
-Heaters
-Sawmills
-Beacon (yes that´s a bit later than most people do, but it still works out for me)
-Steam Hub
-Steel
-Unlock T1
-2nd Scout
-Coal mine
-Generator Level 2

the developers decided to throw free units at them when they're getting attacked, i see it happen all the time. they generally get 3 free units a turn when being attacked.

Went back to check, but once you finish the puzzle it doesn't spawn again. What's the starting setup look like?

Both spikes are covered with fire, there's wood on the other side of the holes, my choice is either fire or wind elemental

I second this. Realistic racing full version is a transformation in realism. I'd also add to this the New Race Leaderboard mod where you can't actually see the percentage of other driver's tires, and also the mod that does away with the stupidly exaggerated mentality boosts that can turn even mid drivers into Verstappens. Sure, the game gets more difficult, but that's the whole idea.
