Only a shield? What's the point of even being a knight then.

Char suffers from a lot of character drift due to being overused. It's funny to see him opposite Lelouch here, as he's another character with the same problem.

The brilliant strategist/mastermind character works best when they have a clear goal and constantly create cunning plans to advance that goal. But as shows go on and on and spin out that original goal into a constantly unreachable target, they get a bit absurdist.

Char in Origin gets to look like a genius, Char over time gradually turns into a genocidal loon.

I can agree with that assessment. It helps that both gained goals that are less goals and more abstract concepts. After all, Lelouch's goal of world peace is nice, but it's a goal that takes many forms, and technically he HAD via conquest, but he wanted it to be a world 'without hatred', which is a lot different.

Mind, if he'd just followed Princess Celestia's Method he could have had a thousand year reign where everyone loved him and looked up to him as a parental figure. That white horse knew how to make her subjects adore her, even as she manipulated them, and played them like puppets!...this is semi canon in the MLP comics.

As for Char, his goal kept changing per series. Some of that was the fact that he WAS supposed to die, several times, since his creator thought it was time. But like Sasuke, the editor didn't want him to die, so he kept coming back, sometimes after his original goal had already been achieved so they had to find something new for him to do.

Worse, since they wanted him not to be the 'villain' but just the antagonist in many of those, they had to warp and twist the world. My favorite still being the retcon that it was the Earth Federation that gassed Side 2, not Zeon, even though that being true alters basically the entire basis of Operation BRITISH and thus the One Year Wars opening moves.
