How is the RNG so bad?

The hand smoothing is prevalent in 'best of one' queues, so if people care about the sanctity of their matches they should definitely avoid those modes. Most of the time when people talk about weirdness in their matches it can be attributed to playing in best-of-one queues where honestly, you get what you get and it's not 'pure' Magic - WotC said that they tweak things in those queues to reduce the number of one-sided games. Basically they avoid you getting horrendously mana screwed by looking I think the top twenty cards and re-shuffling your deck if the land/spells ratio is out of whack for your deck. This isn't meant to be the case in best-of-three since it's used for competitive Magic.

Anyway, all of that is well documented by WotC themselves and none of that has any impact on the rng they use, though, except that in single game queues the opening draws of both players won't feature extreme runs of spells or lands. That has an affect on the power level of certain decks and even makes some decks dysfunctional which again if you care about playing 'paper-like' (or paper-ish) games of Magic you'd probably want to avoid single-match queues.

The queues on the other hand are not random and you'll get matched against what the matchmaker deems is needed to balance winrates for all players. For example you might be put into a match to stomp your opponent in order to keep their winrate in check (based on your deck, nothing to do with draws in the match), and vice-versa, sometimes if you go on a massive tear you will end up being the under-dog and facing obscure decks with ludicrous main-deck hate cards that are basically only good against the deck/archetype you are playing. You'll see these top-dog/underdog match ups more often than you would expect given a purely randomised matchmaker.

Players basically didn't complain enough about this stuff so now we're stuck with it. I personally feel it's kind of unfortunate and it made me play less and less Arena in recent years just because I don't want to be used as a counter-match up in order to balance the statistics. That doesn't feel like good gameplay for me or my opponent or the overall metagame as a whole. I dunno if they disable it in the mythic ranks and let players get purely random matches, or not. This is particularly annoying when you're brewing weird decks that might be 30% to win most matches but are 80% against certain decks - you'll end up being put into those 80% winrate matches far too often. This is even more the case in Brawl where cards and commanders skew your potential matches so much that sometimes you'll never face certain commanders with certain decks, or more often, you'll face a never ending slew of the same annoying commanders.

You can take those last two paragraphs with a grain of salt since they're anecdotal, although the brawl match up data is out there if people are interested (though I warn you it's pretty depressing knowing your cool commander is arbitrarily getting crappy matches).
