Will do my best to look for them, just need time to regenerate (advice if you will ever think this big chocolate dessert is really wrong choice to eat wholly, don't do it, I should listen to this inner voice and that's why I ask for more time)

And question, sources you provide still talks about Edo period when samurai and bushi merged, Edo period is after the events of the game, so for 12th century probably other source would be needed as a standing point
By all means my guy. I've had those days where I ate more than I should've and it left me feeling pretty ♥♥♥♥, look after yourself first.

And I should probably clarify further. I only mention the 12th century because later in that century is when, according to a fairly cursory search, the terms became largely synonymous, with Saburai just being an older and more obscure pronunciation

I'm mostly interested in the time period around when the game is actually set in this regard, which is indeed shortly before the Edo period. It kicks off in 1579 and Yasuke's involvement in the game runs from then through Nobunaga's death in 1582 and a bit beyond. Historically, Yasuke himself was only in Japan from 1579-1582, having been exiled after Nobunaga's death since he was still very much viewed as an outsider by the incoming powers.

Now I know that this presents a REALLY narrow window in which to find comparisons, so let's broaden it out a bit. Just any time within the 1500's or 1600's. 16th or 17th century, kind of handwaving how much more strict and formal the title became during the Edo period.

The term evolved a lot over the centuries in Japan, starting off very, very loose with it just being servants of the nobility, and moving on to becoming a noble warrior class, and eventually just a family title before vanishing almost entirely in the 1800's during the Meiji restoration, at least in terms of referring to actual living Samurai.

If we're talking about usage in Yasuke's lifetime and time in Japan, we should look for other contemporary evidence of similar usage in a similar time period where the words still had the same or at least very, very similar meaning.

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/二条晴良 if translation doesn't lie he is in some history of all samurai text while being civil officer, time period fits, through suffering I found somebody

Of course the term evolved, language evolves, from my native language great example: word "dziwka" means "♥♥♥♥♥" and it evolved from "dziewka" which meant "inmarried young woman".

Because of language evolution I prefer to lean towards no when it comes to Yasuke being samurai but sincerely "we don't know for sure" should be best answer, it would be the best if somebody studying history of the language now to step in, all white and tell whole history of the word/kanji and how it changes through ages, probably those people have better things than sitting on steam forums (or they are just watching us with popcorn and have laugh of their life, always possible, just saying)

If somebody would deminish Yasuke role for Nobunaga I would go defensive for our African skyscraper, all texts proves he was important to Nobunaga, even as information source about outside world, Nobunaga was interested in it, so having even ex-slave he promoted to high official ranking as just the information source would mean a lot to him.

Guy I found should match requested time period, I won't say, it was fun to look for non military renowned person from that period. As brother in love for Sengoku Jidai you know well it is easier to find high born lady to be married to powerful person (which mainly were samurai warriors) than civilian minister/court member. Try Romance of Three Kingdoms of China to study, it's amazing as well.

If I remember correctly during Meiji restoration haven't samurais went back into more civilian roles than warrior? I am not found of gunpowder dominance eras of history so I am not sure.

I will call it by name, if I was on Yasuke place, I would gladly share information I have with Nobunaga and there was something about being sword-bearer as Yasuke role, so this damn sword would be sparkling clean and could be used to blind opponents. If price of freedom was just being walking "google search engine" and sword polisher, we have a deal.
