My Final Take on Dune: Awakening – A Flawed, Frustrating Mess
I know many of you won’t agree, some don’t care if a game sucks, blinded by hype or lore. But the broken mechanics, bugs, and half baked features in Dune are impossible to ignore. Here’s why this game is a massive letdown.

The $50 price tag is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ outrageous for what’s essentially an incomplete game. Funcom slaps a “full release” label on it, but let’s be real, this is early access in disguise. Developers have been exploiting this tactic for years, releasing buggy, unfinished games while charging premium prices. Dune is no exception, and it’s a slap in the face to players.

Sandworms, iconic to Dune’s lore, are way too aggressive. The gameplay loop is repetitive and joyless, fly down, grab spice, fly up, repeat. Even with soft step boots, standing near spice in silence summons a worm instantly. There’s no strategy, no thrill, just tedious evasion that kills the fun. Not to mention the bugs that get you instantly killed without warning.

Sandstorms in Hagga Basin are relentless and serve no purpose. They’re not challenging, they’re annoying. Pitch a tent, stow your vehicle, and wait it out, every single time. It’s a tedious mechanic that adds nothing but frustration to the experience.

Deep Desert sandstorms are even worse, shredding Ornithopters. You’re forced to carry repair kits everywhere or risk losing your ride. Hiding between rocks might work, but most of the time, you’re ♥♥♥♥♥♥. It’s not a challenge, it’s a punishment for daring to explore.

The bugs are so rampant you’d think they’re a core mechanic. Picture this, you’re next to a downed ship, ready to fly off in your thopter. The ground shakes, locks you in place, and you’re dead. I lost 8,000 spice and 500 plates to this ♥♥♥♥, resources that take hours to grind. These glitches aren’t occasional, they’re constant.

Combat is among the worst I’ve experienced. Shields, true to the lore, are tough, but Funcom takes it to a ridiculous extreme. You’re up against shielded enemies spamming elbow strikes that stagger and demolish three decked out players. Why bother with guns or knives when a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ elbow is the ultimate weapon? It’s laughably unbalanced.

Abilities meant to counter stagger? They don’t work. You still get knocked around like a ragdoll. Heavy armor drains stamina, light armor leaves you vulnerable to rifles and poison. Bene Gesserit perks that supposedly prevent poisoning? Useless. Shields drop, poison hits, and you’re screwed. The mechanics are fundamentally flawed.

Dune is a soul crushing grind for $50. It’s a time sink with no rewarding endgame. Mixing PvP with PvE feels like a lazy attempt to make things “challenging,” but it just frustrates PvE players trying to progress. The combat sucks, the mechanics are broken, and the game can’t decide what it wants to be. Instead of fun, you’re left wondering, “Why the ♥♥♥♥ would they design it like this?”

No dedicated servers, seriously? You have to pay for private servers through a service, and even then, your progress isn’t saved on a cloud or exportable. Quit a private server, and all your work is gone. Funcom’s excuse? “The architecture doesn’t allow it.” ♥♥♥♥ your architecture. We paid $50 for a game where we can’t save characters or builds. Die to a worm from a bug, lose everything. Pay taxes or lose your base. It’s like they’re trying to make you hate the game.

This is a poorly designed, unfinished mess masquerading as a full release. The player base is already dwindling, barely hitting 30k now, and I’d bet it drops below 10k soon, worse than Funcom’s Conan Exiles. Open your eyes, this game isn’t cooked, and it’s got a long way to go. Funcom, you’re the most incompetent dev team I’ve ever seen. Fix your ♥♥♥♥.

1. "It’s a flop" Factually wrong

Dune: Awakening sold 1M+ copies in under a month and peaked at 189,000 concurrent players — Funcom’s biggest launch ever.
Steam rating is still Mostly Positive (~80%). Player count drop after launch is normal. Calling it a flop is false.

2. "It’s early access in disguise" Incorrect

Official full release was June 10, 2025.
Yes, there are bugs but multiple large patches have already fixed hundreds of issues in less than 2 months.

3. "Sandworms and storms are pointless" They’re core gameplay

Worms are meant to be a constant threat (it’s literally Dune). Soft Step boots, rock travel, and night sandwalking work to avoid them.
Storms limit reckless flying and add environmental strategy.

4. "PvP/PvE mix is bad" Intentional design

Resource competition is part of the game’s DNA. Funcom is already tuning balance for PvE players.

5. "No dedicated servers, progress lost" Misleading

Official servers save progress.
Private rented servers don’t export characters this was announced before launch.

6. "Funcom is incompetent" Disrespectful & unfounded

Funcom has hotfixed major issues (like the accidental Deep Desert PvP) and reimbursed players.
They communicate regularly via patch notes and dev streams.
Criticism is valid, but insults don’t help anyone and add nothing to constructive discussion.

Respect goes both ways.
You can dislike a game and point out flaws without throwing personal insults at developers or players who enjoy it. Feedback hits harder when it’s backed by facts, not name-calling.
I agree with your response. The game has bugs, its new and should be expected. All games have bugs even old games. Some people would burn down the house just because a door does not close properly or a bug is found, instead of letting the experts fix the problems.
