There is lots of cover and obstacles which you can't climb over while it feels like it should be possible. Is it lag? Is it a feature? Do I oversee something?

That is what this game is all about, and it's precisely what I love best about it. Transforming each planet is quite a different experience from any of the others, so I have no clue why you are going on about 'doing the same thing over and over'. I suspect the problem may be in your same-ole approach to the gameplay, not the actual game itself...
