Re-review after almost 4 years break

Feirefiz
Hello everyone,

I always loved the premise of this game, but despite this I have not touched this game in around 4 years - when i had at least some mostly entertaining 12 hrs of gameplay. I had the feeling to have seen everything (which is a petty because the premise would be perfect for a game that is infinitely fun), but I understood it's EA etc. I also gave a review where I tried to be as constructive as possible ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/754500/discussions/0/2951537622596643160/ )

Now, I played again for a couple of hours and wanted to comment again:

The good:
- Everything positive I wrote last time is still part of the game
- I can in general say it definitely overall improved and is more fun. Why?
- It's less grindy in the beginning
- Negotiations have been overhauled and are less tedious
- Less unnecessary events
- Optimization has been improved in general
- Politics seems more useful and also easier - more goals and different ways to reach
- The opponent is sometimes indeed targeting your weak spots and can be annoying
- The agents seem somehow way more useful and balanced than I remember them
- Couple more useful interactions than I remember (stock market of course, governor etc.) which makes the game feel more interconnected (last time it felt more like different games)
- I like this holding system as a motivation to have vertical integration. Also that it works across states! (In general there need to be more "across states" parts)
- In addition to holdings there seems to be dynamic prices now and you can really feel strong differences between different states and their prices, laws and conditions - great!

The bad:
- The core gameplay loop is still to choose which shares to buy and then have countless endless tedious negotiation mini-games! They are improved ok, but that just makes them annoying a bit later, but still annoying! For a game that you potentially could play 10s of hours, why have such a mini-game that gets old quickly? Imagine if you train a soldier in Age of Empires there's a probability he does not make it and you decide for every single unit which training strategy to choose? I'm sorry guys, but this is still the core problem of your game - I hope the game offers at some point so many other challenges that you will completely cut this part and replace it with something like fixed probabilities or something.

- Except for (some) opponent(s) the AI is way too weak in this game. There's still almost only one good way of managing a company and neither the competition nor the other shareholders are in your way. The only thing preventing you from "doing more faster" is not to be in the mood for this horrible mini-game.

- Despite a weak competitor AI and more dynamic conditions (see above) which forces you to diversify / not expand endlessly / do more strategic decision in general - it's still very straightforward what you have to do (buy, expand, maybe sell, buy, expand) and there is almost no risk of failure. I think the game would be way more interesting if there would be more ways of failing easily - especially in the beginning, but also later (the monopoly mechanism is alright - at least it motivates you into politics, but what about monopoly lawsuits etc.? Big recessions?)

- Politics is more useful, but the election casino mini-game is also boring after one time and it's a bit tedious to stay on up to date as well. Would be nicer indeed to be able to just finance big lobby groups and tell them which laws you want to have and they push for that plus for financing politicians who stand for that - would also be closer to real life where companies are not simply bribing single reps.

- There's a lot of laws that seem at least pretty useless, and for the useful ones (duties) it's not always clear what the direct effect on your businesses is (couldn't there be a preview function?)

- There is some ahistoricity in the party positions. The Democrats in the 19th century were racist and against taxes (because they were the party of the landowners in the south) whereas Republicans were the party of anti-slavery Abraham Lincoln and pro taxes and pro infrastructure expansion (which was both considered to be industry-stimulating) - i'm simplifying this a bit, but the game positions seem just very close to nowadays parties and that's wrong - read about Rockefeller's positions as a start (he was Republican), but also how the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 was initiated by Republicans!

- I know that this state-based system is historical (and the game represents this with the "trust" function, which is indeed how standard oil centralized its operations across state lines) - but it makes tedious gameplay if you have to change management parameters for every company - I think some streamlining would be nice here - especially for having one list of all companies (shares) across states!

- The Ambition system is a nice idea, but in the end it's anyway just about bribing (or bribing with shares of companies) so could be replaced with a bribing function. Btw, for giving loans the game does not have a mini-game - there"s just a risk that you wont get the money back - this is how most of the game should feel like!

Summary:
The game was good 4 years ago, slightly improved - but still should get rid of mini-games, improve competition and market functions, make things more streamlined and less tedious, connect more dots, make bad decisions more risky and good decisions more profitable - and it's gonna be a masterpiece :)
