I agree, player should have a choice, simple toggle option or gender option would be a nice QoL.

For that to happen you need to finish the drama theater quest, where you recommend three plays, then you pay for stage materials, then you watch the play. once the play is done (all this is in the lighthouse area), klaus meets up next day and say they can use the stage. so unless you finish this other quest, this quest cannot proceed.
