You really only get a monetary punishment on the first 2 days if you do, letting people in is a key requirement for a lot of the plot.

Don't be so hard on yourself, everyone has to learn. What are you doing wrong? Learn from your mistakes and you'll soon find that expert is not as bad as you think. An added bonus is playing alongside other players that know what they're doing, but you also have to know the same. Do you know the maps? One thing that can work in your favour, if you're playing on maps you don't know then it will be hard.

Are you using the right weapons for your play style? No point using a sniper weapon if you can't aim, you also have to learn that opening fire with a shotgun can incap a whole team in seconds, learn to control your trigger finger.

Mods is not the answer, learn from your mistakes, practice, practice and more practice, that's all you need.

I can only suggest to stay away for now. The game has many, many issues, like the reviews suggest. And the developers are very slow to respond to all the issues.

As someone who bought this game: it feels like I paid for an early access title that is overrun with rampant cheating and no solution in sight to fix this.

I didn't get the impression that hotswapping characters was a core, expected or necessary mechanic.
Mainly due to having multiple runs where i didn't get a secondary character until i hit the third area in a run and if hotswapping characters was that important, i'd expect there to be easier or earlier access to other characters to facilitate this core mechanic.
There not being any situations where i felt i needed a particular skill or set up to get past it also meant that i only felt the need to swap characters if i goofed and was in danger of dying.
The impression i got is that the other characters you can pick up along the way are extra lives, backups, there to give you a buffer to keep a run going, there's not enough marked difference between how each of them play for it to be a matter of 'specific tool for a specific situation'. They're all hammers.
