I ain't touched it since personally, I want to, but I know some stupid ♥♥♥♥ like that will ruin my playthrough.
I get where you're coming from there, and it is a hard lesson to learn. But logically, after the fact, I realized the game has pathfinding, it has fires on the ground, and this was a combination of those two features.
It's like saying the devs are ♥♥♥♥ because you walked into a horde of zombies. The pathfinding will not regard hazards and that's the same in nearly all games.
When we use campfires, we know the campfires can be walked over and we know pathfinding will take any path that can be walked and ignore hazards. It just takes that first time we make that mistake to realize why it is worth that little bit extra to build the better fire pits that cannot be pathed through, or place stuff around the campfire that can't be pathed through.

It is a feature, not a bug. A bug would be if the campfire couldn't be walked on normally, and pathfinding somehow made the character walk into it, or if fire usually don't spread to nearby tiles and you caught fire by walking next to the fire. Walking over the fire and catching fire is a feature, not a bug. One that many players use, since the zombies have the same pathfinding the player characters have.
I'm sorry, but I stand by it, I understand pathfinding not accounting for things like zombies, or fire spreading on the ground, but a campfire, an object everyone knows not to walk directly into, seems like something that absolutely should be accounted for, once again, no one in their right mind would walk into an open campfire, I wouldn't, and I feel it's safe to assume you wouldn't either.
