Have you heard of/used an online map called iZurvive yet?

It can show you where the higher tier loot might spawn, military bases, and so forth. It can help you with navigation too.

NB - chasing militarily loot is fun but I like the hunting lodges as well, some good stuff to be had but never seem as busy or looted as military bases.

There are 6 or 7 of them on the map.
I don't remember all of them but
One on the island with the habitat on top just outside the door. (Delta Station)
One outside the Koppa mine
One inside the Koppa mine.
One in the Twisty Bridges about 500 m south of the pod (varies)
One on land (Outpost Zero)

you can turn the hud off as far as I know. The character's appearance is part of the artstyle; the game is not meant to look realistic, and therefore the characters are stylised

Gunplay is identical

Recommend to cool off and make sure you're in the mood to play when you do boot it up. If not you're likely to lose patience and keep spiraling. You can learn to beat easy mode consistently, keep at it and things will click. You could look up guides if you want but not necessary. The boss fight.. Don't give up when you get there!
