Things to collect:
Garbage bags - they are light and one of the most convenient containers. Get as many as you can.
Machete/hunting knives - they are semi-rare and useful later.
At least one of each: hammer, saw, wrench, pipe wrench, screwdriver.
Better containers: You need the best backpack you can find (the biggest). Duffel bag can double as a backpack. Also get two fanny packs. In B42 there are more options.
If you're planning to build your base later from scratch - nails are worth taking. After the first 5 boxes - not so much. If you don't plan to build - just take one box.
Office coolers are heavy but let you use your base much longer by providing water after the shutdown.
Don't stockpile tons of food. It's heavy and you can loot it later anyway. Some food at home - sure, but don't get carried away.
Skill books - take one of each you don't have yet. Stockpile them at home.

After you feel semi-confident, learn how to enter cars:
Some are open, so just try to enter first.
If closed, smash the passenger or back window with something in your hands, enter the car, press Z to switch to the driver seat. Check for a key in the ignition, in the glovebox, and open the trunk if it's closed (click the icon) to loot it later.
Sometimes you can find the key on zombies around the car or on the ground. But it's usually better to check more cars than waste time searching around one.
Next, you need gasoline - it can be siphoned from other cars or taken at a gas pump using a gas can.

You can skip the car-key part by starting as burglar and just using V in the driver seat to select hotwire.

As soon as you have gasoline and a key, the noob part is over, and you should be competent enough to ask specific questions.

Gotta wonder why they thought it was a good idea to patch a game before the weekend that they obviously didn't playtest enough.

Update:

Allready unlock 4 bonus from rally order.

and have 10 players join rally. (3 players allready have +30k mission token),
need 2 more (+30k mission token) to unlock last bonus from rally order.

Storm: The Divinty 6 Lightning Bolt (not sure how it was called) works well. You can transform it to a weapon attack. My First Char was build around that.
Insanely Strong. I used a Bow + The Blizzard and stacked everything with Lichtnig bolt procs.
The main attack alone had around 2k plus dps. Was really fun.

Some abilities need investment into Energy regen to main a Skill besides the basic Attack.
But Passives + Auras or Energy leach skills help you out.
You can main many Skills with a bit of investment.

Look out for flask with + energy regen / Passive.

Weight values in PZ aren't actually about "weight" but closer to "encumbrance" which includes clumsiness or added difficulty carrying an item, but I see what you're saying.

I'll take a look at pistol/revolver weights soonish. :)

And yet, I've never claimed to be neutral on the topic. If I haven't made it clear enough, I find you offensive. You and your moral obfuscation are offensive. Hiya, I was wondering if anyone further in the game has seen anyway to upgrade the backpack?

I would say it is my only issue atm. I have been so immersed with this game, but having a full backpack and having to skip my hobbit butt all the way home then back to receive a gift has become super tedious .
