The game is a loading screen simulator.

A loading screen is ANY sequence that makes the player busy, often not related to gameplay which sucks, while the game is loading content to be able to continue. The time duration is not the problem, some games manage to keep the logical game fluidity while loading content. No Man's Sky is a good example where you don't notice the loading screens unless you are familiar with engines and coding.
In SF the loading screens are badly done but probably a limitation of the used engine not allowing secondary actions while loading.

Again, it's not the long time duration in SF which sucks but the interruption of the logical gameplay which doesn't take place while loading in the background.

The real issue isn’t just the loading screens themselves , it’s the Creation Engine, Bethesda’s in-house Frankenstein’s monster of a game engine. It’s been around in one form or another for over two decades, and at this point it’s old enough to drink, drive, and still clip through the floor.

Instead of retiring it and moving to a modern engine, Bethesda has kept bolting on new parts over the years, starting way back with Gamebryo in Morrowind, tweaking it for Oblivion and Fallout 3, rebranding it as the Creation Engine for Skyrim, and then layering more features on for Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and now Starfield. The problem? Many of the old quirks and bugs from the earliest versions are still baked into the foundation. It’s like building a skyscraper on a creaky old house , no matter how fancy the upper floors are, the basement is still rotting.

Modern engines (like Unreal Engine or Decima) are designed from the ground up to handle massive worlds, advanced physics, seamless loading, and complex AI without stopping gameplay dead in its tracks. Bethesda’s engine simply can’t do that efficiently. It’s built on outdated architecture, which means things like seamless background streaming , where the game loads new areas without interrupting you ,are either incredibly hard to implement or straight-up impossible without rewriting huge chunks of the core code.

That’s why Starfield has so many jarring loading screens: the engine just can’t handle certain transitions in real time. Other developers figured out years ago how to mask loading entirely:

Mass Effect’s elevators are the classic example. They’re technically loading screens, but they feel like part of the game world. In God of War or Horizon Zero Dawn, you can walk through narrow passages or watch a short cutscene while the next area loads in the background. You never feel pulled out of the experience.

Bethesda’s approach, on the other hand, still relies on hard breaks fade to black, loading spinner, then back to gameplay. And as long as they keep patching the same old engine instead of replacing it, those breaks are going to keep breaking immersion.

The Creation Engine is like an old diesel with no inspection sticker: loud, smelly, constantly falling apart and Bethesda keeps duct-taping it together hoping it’ll pass for another year. Bethesda needs to stop dragging it around and finally put it to sleep with some dignity.

I have to laugh, honestly, most of the cut scenes, that are very short, are meant for realism.

Walking through an airlock takes time and it is a fact that nothing is loading during this short 1 sec cut screen, it is easy to check, get a second screen (borrow one from a friend or invite him to take part. Put your borrowed screen on Windows Task Manager and see how much the game accesses the hard drive

Think about it for a moment, most of the time, the CPU, GPU and RAM are doing stuff e.g. it renders your ship (which is unique to every player) when landing, taking off, or in flight

Most of what trolls consider loading screens are very short realistic cut scenes

There are loading screens in SF but most are transitioned nicely, The true loading screens in SF are for changing function or changing (swapping out) large areas and with a half decent rig and an SSD they are very short by industry standards

One of the main things that really annoy me with this forum, is the distinct lack of qualifications and or experience from the trolls who usually offer no sound reasoning for their criticism. Of the very few that do, most are like "barrack room lawyers" they think that logical thought will lead them to the answer, but IT development is like law, logic will help you about 10% of the time, the rest of the time it will make you look a fool, or get you into trouble

And please stop comparing the good quality graphic s(although not absolutely the nuts) of SF with a cartoon like NMS
