Not really trying to join your argument, but I just wanted to comment a little.

I've seen this same argument before, that changing a game is 'dumbing it down' when something in the game is proving to be a problem for players, even when some people are dealing with it.

What I want to point out is no one is asking for the mechanic to be removed. They just want it fixed. There is nothing wrong with asking for a somewhat broken mechanic to be fixed. Even you have to have noticed that sometimes the human exploders can just appear on top of the player, killing them instantly. Even if you're extremely good at the game, adaptable, lightning reflexes... what are people supposed to do? And do you think that was an intended design, to add a mob that just one shots you and ends your run?

If you notice, the devs saw the problems too. They replied that they knew something was an issue, and were working on a fix. So there actually WAS a problem.

Lastly, I just find myself wondering about this almost masochistic mentality when playing games. Sure, you want some challenge. You might even want the game to be unreasonably hard in some special mode or challenge stage. But why would you defend a glitch in the game that's obviously unintended AFTER the devs said so?

So this is not the first time i've seen this attitude show up in discussion about flawed game mechanics or criticism of game elements.

I had this argument about "luck" on the balatro forum and it seems like people CANNOT accept any degree of criticisms about how luck is linked to success in roguelike games. They will say that you can surpass ANY amount of bad luck with skills and knowledges.

It also happened to me in the stellar blade forum, and other discussion related to games.

I think it's because once people suffer from an annoying game mechanic that pissed them off and finally beat it, they want other player to suffer as much as they did.
They developped this kind of pride of having succeeded against this mechanic, sweating it out and "getting good", and they feel like others should also go past this challenge in order to be recognized as true players.
They also may feel like they're getting underestimated and it may attack their ego. "You think i'm too bad to beat this the way it is right now?" as if they have something to prove to others or to themselve.
And also, the most experienced player will always to stay the way they know it and mastered it. They are most likely to have internalized and rationalized the problem in their own mind and convinced themselve that this is how the game ought to be played.

People are pretty quick to become elitists as soon as it affects their pride. It's very very prevalent in pretty much all game forums and it's hard to parse throught legitimate complaints at times.

Anyways there's a patch that just came out and they adressed the issue in some ways so as you said it's a proof that it was not an intended effect of the mechanic.

Haha, I have seen this in places too. Especially if you hang around any discussions about classic games of the 8 and 16 bit era. They will get upset that the games were literally designed to be harder in certain regions because they didn't want you to beat the game with a rental. Usually the Japanese versions of these old games would have save systems and such pulled out completely for the NA or EU markets. "NES hard" was really just devs making their games less fun and not even the original vision of the game compared to the Japanese versions.

Enemies that can one shot you in games like this are cancer to the enjoyment of them. I play Halls of Torment that has exploding enemies and they have never one shotted me but that games feels harder than this one does.
