The Blind One
The thing about Rimworld combat is that it is heavily balanced to make melee as viable.

Almost to ridiculous levels.

It's way too easy to close the distance quickly with a ranged opponent using something like a shield belt and once the distance is closed, they are now at a complete disadvantage and will get melee'd to death rather easily.

A ranged pawn usually won't have more than 2 or at best 3 tries to hit their melee opponent at range. With the first being at max distance where the chance to hit is minimal and 2nd when they are almost right on top of them where most long ranged weapons don't have very good accuracy, such as rifles.

This leads to the phenomenon where players feel ranged weapons feel like crap in vanilla, because they see their pawns shoot at max distance, miss, and then see them shoot again when the melee enemies are right in front of them and with a little bad RNG luck they will miss again due to low accuracy at short ranges for rifles.

And now all your ranged pawns are in combat with melee pawns and your rifles are basically useless while your ranged pawns had clear shots at their opponent who was running over field without any cover and is now stabbing holes into them with something as simple as a spear

And now your pawns are dead on the ground and you realize that Spear > Rifle.

It doesn't feel good.

This problem is compounded when the enemy zerg rushes you with something like 3x as many melee raiders as you have pawns. Even if every ranged pawn hit their mark as they were storming you and managed to take them out, the 2nd row of zerg raiders will get into melee with you regardless and the third row of zerg will ensure that every ranged pawn is now in a 2 vs 1 melee combat at their disadvantage and it is at that point you realize that it doesn't matter if you have good guns.

The only thing that truly matters is frontage. Reducing the amount of enemies you have to engage with at any time. And the culmination of this concept is the ''Killbox'' which intentionally funnels your enemies towards you 1 by 1 so you can leverage the firepower of your entire colony unto them at once.
