I think I've figured out how you're "meant" to play this game? (Serpulo)

Understanding how to have fun in a game shouldn't be a hidden secret to unlock.
A part of having fun at a game IS discovering what the best strategies are.

Supposer eredeti hozzászólása:
that is the role of game design: to make it easy to find the fun in the game. It's not about explicitly stating "Play the game like this." That's not what I was suggesting they should be doing. Design is about indicating to the player how to play the game *implicitly*, just by the design of things. That's what I was commenting on.
The game already does this though. If a strategy is effective, then it's typically fun, because progressing through the game and seeing your empire grow is inherently fun. I don't know about any instances of people optimising the fun out of this game.

Supposer eredeti hozzászólása:
The thing is, my strategy *was* working. I didn't say the way I was playing it wasn't "working." It just slowly stopped being that fun or interesting, because it slowly ground to a halt is all.
Okay, then what's the issue? While your strategy was working for you, you were having fun I assume. Speedrunning sectors and launching ASAP can totally be fun; once you reach the attack mode sectors, it's generally how you are supposed to play them, and I personally had fun when I did that. It's a bit unconventional to immediately play the game like this, but not inherently unfun.

It only starts not being fun once the strategy breaks down due to a lack of infrastructure, but that wasn't an issue for you:

Supposer eredeti hozzászólása:
I *did* experiment. That's how I figured out that maybe I was playing it different to how the devs intended. That's *how* I "eventually figured out that building up your industrial base is a good strategy."
You solved the problem for yourself by realising you should build more infrastructure, so now you can continue having fun.

The only issue here would be if you continued launching ASAP despite it turning into a bad strategy. At that point, it's a player issue for not being inventive and using the more effective, fun strategy. However, that didn't happen, so what's the problem?

Supposer eredeti hozzászólása:
Good design doesn't just mean adding implicit cues to teach the player either. It also means nerfing things that are unfun so people don't naturally gravitate to playing the game in an unfun way (for example, balancing out an OP/broken/cheese strat that makes the game way too easy removing the challenging fun).
Of course nerfing things is important, but I don't see how that's relevant.
