Shun herself isn't very popular, despite having a Raiden Shogun / Yae Miko type body. Around 80% of Shun artwork features her smaller self (as these images are tagged with both Shun and Shun (small) tags).

And I guess she might not stand out much in other games where every character has the exact same body type, but her smaller self wouldn't even exist in those games.

What do you mean "she isn't popular" ?
If you compare her to Shiroko or Hoshino, ofc, but if you compare her to the whole roster, am pretty sure she's up there. :P

Are artists not successful because they're the second best selling in their category, or are they really successful because they're the second best selling in their category ? :P

She has 1/6th the tag count of Shiroko (who isn't even the most popular by this metric) and 1/5th of that is her regular form and that poster was specifically arguing regular shun being popular. And that is just comparing to one of the actually popular characters. Blue Archive tag on Gelbooru has 326k images, regular Shun is <1% of that sitting at around 500 (including images that also contain other characters but not small Shun). That number compares to S.Mika who came out just last month. Yes, specifically S.Mika, not just Mika with any swimsuit from before that reveal, has more art than adult form Shun.
Adult form Shun is not anywhere near the top of list in popularity, or even the middle. The only characters she can beat are probably ones that also never got alts (let's be real, small Shun caters to a completely different preference than adult Shun, even if you don't consider her body), like Momiji or Shimiko. Even some of those have her beat like Chihiro, Kaho, or Megu, just to name the ones with a similar body type.
She's not second place. She's probably not even in top 100, which is saying something when there are only like 150 named characters and at least 80% of those are playable.
This all despite her having a clearly defined niche. She's the only unaged character that isn't a robot (aris) or clearly a child (cherino), implying she is an adult, and a fellow teacher. Any person interested in that kind of character only has her to focus their interest on and she still can't beat those lower ranks.

To be honest, I have managed to find quite a few. Obviously not every time, but often enough that I can keep myself fed mostly via cooked scorpion

It seems to be a feature, you can clean it for for 1-5 dollars, much like cleaning the trash outside can.

I didn't notice any prompts to clean it when I looked at it. Strange.

as far as i have seen there is no prompt. there should be a mop/brook that you can pick up. as you walk to the dirty areas you just click to clean.
