Why they need to add scalings to the shields?

Here i want to talk about how i think shields sucks compared to the elden ring, why they chose to nerf shields so much in the first place and lastly how they can improve it.
Bonus why i think shields can be good to use in your games.


First of all how shields sucks and what is wrong with them
  • Guard boost: Overall it looks like nothing changed anything in guard boost number but stamina damage much higher so any small shield with 40 guard boost in elden ring gives same experience as greatshield with 80 in nightreign. And a brass shield in elden ring which is a medium shield is much stronger than any greatshield can be in nightreign.
  • Damage negations: They straight up nerfed lot of non-phy damage negations of shields such as fire, lightning, holy, magic and gave everything 100% phy damage negation.


Why they chose to nerf shields so much in my opinion

They threw away all Str, Fai, Int, Dex and Arc requirement system. Anyone can use any type of spell and weapon. In the elden ring on of best shield out there is fingerprint shield and it requires 40 str. If you are not focusing around strength hitting 40 strength requirement is really hard. But anyone can use it in nightreign. There is memes about revenant using biggest weapon possible. There is no weight system either. Because of all of the things they needed to make sure shields is not op for people like recluse, revenant and duchess. But the way they nerfed shields is completely destroyed for every single nightfarer.


How they can improve it?

I realized i lost myself in writing so you can skip the paragraph below.

It is simple. The way they made it for rest of the armaments. You see the thing is in the nightreign they put sharp scalings to the weapons and armaments. In the elden ring weapons actually had lot of bad scalings such as C and D even when they are max level. So diffirence in the damage output between someone that put their soul in that attirbute and someone that give just enoguh to be able to use the weapon itself was smaller. In this game they made it so lot of weapon scales s with their main thing. If it is big weapon then it will be strength. If it is slashing type or just smaller weapon it is dex. If it is seal S with faith. If it is stave S with int. They threw away lot of complexity scalings in the weapons too. There is no seal or stave that scales with 2 attirbute at the same time. They are all the same. There is no melee weapon that scales good with the other attirbute then their main ones. For example there is greatswords that scales with faith[eldenringnightreign.wiki.fextralife.com] but they are C scaling. So even if you have S in faith, wylder is gonna use better with A scaling in str. There is a dagger with int scaling[eldenringnightreign.wiki.fextralife.com] you may think duchess[eldenringnightreign.wiki.fextralife.com] with high scaling in both dex and int is gonna be the best for this weapon but executor[eldenringnightreign.wiki.fextralife.com] with low scaling with int and S scaling with dex is actually much stronger with it. Even their ash of war now scales not with their specific attirbutes but their overall attack rating. When executor uses ash of war on that dagger you may think because of their low int stat it is gonna bad but actually better than anyone because that dagger has A scaling in the dex and executor has the highest dex.

In short i believe they need to add endurance or strength scaling to the shields. Not their damage output part but for their guard boost part and damage negation part. So anyone is gonna be able to use shields but revenant is not gonna be able to as good as raider can. There is memes about revenants that using the biggest weapons they find. Is it good? Absolutely not. But both raider and revenant can use it anyway. But shields in this moment is not usable by anyone other than guardian. Even guardian cant use it without his "passive" ability. Without using his passive ability you will get guard broken every second.



Why the ♥♥♥♥ you may want to use shields in a game where speed is everything?

Because of guard counters. You see the shields may seem just for defencive capabilities but shields have their offencive capabilities as well. And that is guard counters. Guard counters is a special attack only usable after blocking. After block you simple click the heavy attack button and your character will do a special attack with sound effect. Why it is so speacial? It does close damage compared to charged heavy and it does close stance damage compared to charged heavy but much faster. It is lot better than you may think but if you didnt try in elden ring you never know how good it is. Is it good for Nightlords? No unfortunately not good. Nightlords too agile and their attacks shoves you just a little bit so you cant land guard counter. You can use halberds charged guard counters with guardian and you can still be able to use effectively. But only some of the nightlords. Why bother if it is not really good? Why not? In this current state of the game shields are not usable by anyone other than guardian with his passive. And i want to use it, i want to have option to use shields in the game.

It turned into really long and boring writing. I hope in the near future devs will consider making shields usable.
