Sounds like you're lacking some critical files or your installation is incomplete or corrupted. Verify it through steam, and if that doesn't help, uninstall and reinstall the game from scratch.

Make sure you also allow steam to install the Steamworks Common Redistributables, as this includes the Visual C runtime files.

@coffeeisgood: yes, I've now also finished the game. Not found every secret but I think I got the majority of it. I think many of the pain points can be improved though. A new perspective and breaks definitely help but I think there are some flaws that can be polished out to make it more enjoyable.

A few more observations, and these are my last comments on part 1, promise:
1) I did not find the ghost upgrade until relatively late in the game. That fundamentally changed the whole experience for me, So many frustrations and annoyances were just wiped away with a ghost telling me if I can do the puzzle or not. I think locking it behind a "secret" update is punishing those not doing well in the first place and is thus counter productive. If the worry is that the ghosts make the game too easy, give the player the choice to turn them off. The game got significantly more fun after the ghost upgrade.
2) I also missed the toothpick and I had no idea I even needed it later on. I only found and acquired it through the ghosts.
3) The vent puzzle is extremely unreliable, it only worked after several attempts of doing the same thing. The battery just gets stuck too easily and the magnet doesn't catch it. . That really held me up and I don't think that's a very "sensible" puzzle in the first place. The magnet should get stuck on the vent in the first place, so the whole puzzle didn't make sense from a physical perspective to me
4) Still find the enemies mostly annoying and not helping with the game. In Supraland 1 there was this back and forth between puzzles and enemies, or at least it felt like it. You reached a new area, went ham on the enemies and then got to do the puzzles. It was a relief from puzzles and had a purpose (coins) that led to new upgrades that I could buy. In this game enemies are only annoying, not really a challenge, and have no purpose as there is no point in going and fighting them.

Legacy mode is the old version. It has not been updated. It is for people who want to play the old one and visit their old ships if they kept saves. It is going to have issues and problems. I would not recommend playing on the version unless you have a ship on there you want to just look at for ideas. The newest updates are on the regular branch.

Before I built the sensor relay even a fully upgraded diplomacy center with many turrets I was still getting attacked. I also recall something about that in the tutorial which i guess I wasn't paying much attention to

Interesting side note. After placing over 500 of them as I was searching the galaxy for CoT stations, I had instant base attacks simply by placing a sensor at least 2 or 3 times.

pippins are dice diamond cards are ruddins hathy is a heart clover clubs and the only spades we see are king and lancer (pippins are dice since their attacks in chapter 3 are rolling dice attacks)

Soul survivor never had a lot of players so you end up with absolute GODS with 5000 hours.

But its also the mode with the most communicative players
