First of all, your text is just a bunch of numbers with no understanding of how the gaming industry actually works. Nobody localizes a game simply because a language is "in the top 10." The key factors are purchasing power, reputational risks, and the legal ability to sell in that market.

Why russian is not being added right now:

1. The russian market is dead. Sanctions, blocked payment systems, no proper platforms - sales are basically zero. Yes, you now bypass restrictions through VPNs and "grey" purchases in other regions, but companies make almost nothing from that - these sales don’t even show up in their official stats, and supporting such an audience isn’t worth it. Any localization would only pay off in 20 years - if ever.

2. Toxic image. russian is directly associated with russia’s aggression. Adding it means opening the door to a wave of backlash and boycotts in the media.

3. Localization costs money. Translators, editors, testers, ongoing updates - all of it costs. If the market doesn’t bring profit, no company will even start the work.

4. "But other countries also speak russian" - not a valid argument. In most of those countries, players use English or their own local language, and for the majority it’s not an issue.

Why Ukrainian is now a higher priority:

Ukraine is a growing, paying market. Despite the war, Ukrainian players are actively buying games on Steam, Epic, GOG, and console stores - officially, without VPNs.

No sanctions or reputational risks. Ukrainian localization is seen as a show of support for a country defending itself, and it creates a positive response worldwide.

Political and cultural value. For studios, it’s a chance to show they stand with the civilized world - not with russia.

A market with a future. The Ukrainian game industry is growing, the number of players is increasing, and supporting Ukrainian now is an investment in the loyalty of millions for years to come.

You are right on point #1 but point #2 is wrong.

I know a lot of Westerners don't understand this so I'll try to explain this simply. There are countries outside of Russia that speak Russian like Belarus or Kazakhstan. Over 100 million Russian speakers that live outside of Russia. Which is more than that 40 million people that lived in Ukraine prior to the war - in reality less than half of people who lived in Ukraine spoke Ukrainian, the majority of them spoke Russian including Zelensky and most of the political elite. He had to learn Ukrainian when the war started for propaganda purposes but still reverts to Russian in private because that was his native tongue growing up. Google it if you don't believe me.

But yeah Russian is in the top 10 most spoken languages worldwide. Ukrainian doesn't even make top 40. For the record, I'm neutral in the war. I hope it ends as quickly as possible. Lots of suffering in it. Very bad for both sides. So I wouldn't quite say one country has a future market and the other doesn't if you actually knew the truth behind it.

Anyways best to both civilians who really don't have a say in the war.
