Now I know a lot of people are going to look at this and say "oh it was a band aid to the bots." Back in 2020 the Sniper bots were really bad. Remember the ♥♥♥♥♥, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, Rainbow Sprinkle and Waffen-SS bots? So they were going around headshotting everyone with aimbots. ♥♥♥♥♥ bots also spammed the microphone with racist garbage. Actually I wonder what happened to the ♥♥♥♥♥ bots, they disappeared long before Valve banned all the bots. Did the creator get hit by lightnign?

So Valve in their infinite wisdom decided to mute free to play accounts. This got the players silence for about 50 days. Only it didn't actually solve the botting problem. One bot in the game? Players need to waste their time kicking him and he might have already walked away with the intel or shot all the people defending the cart by the time you kick him. Four bots in the game on one side? By the time you kick all of them, there isn't enough time for a good game and people will leave when the map vote comes up so more bots might join. 5 bots in the game? Well about 1/4 of the bots at this time started f2 on votes on bots from the same network and by 2024 almost every bot did this so most of the time they were unkickable by this point. It was the cheating that was a problem not the racist spamming. If Valve fixed VAC and the bots changed to idling in spawn and spamming racist comments, that would be closer to solving the problem than their mute.

OK give Valve the benefit of the doubt that maybe anticheat takes years to develop and they didn't want to hire a bunch of Indians (as a donor of Zesty Jesus suggested) to manually ban the bots as a stopgap. So they tried to silence the bots in an attempt to do damage control while they worked on a long term solution while doing almost nothing in the short term. I saw almost nothing since most bot accounts rarely lasted 4 months after I spot them before getting VAC banned, but the bans didn't seem to actually fix the problem. In the light of damage control, silencing the F2P makes some sense which let's players use voice chat to coordinate on bot kicking. But why mute voice commands? the bots were never spamming "medic" "go go go" "good job" or any of that, it was always text chat and voice chat. So why couldn't they let F2P call for medic? Even if muting text chad was justified, the voice commanders were neve rused by the bots. Also I think your cleint would just refuse to play voice commands until the current one is finished anyways.

Given there are too many people fishing for clown awards, I am just going to take the opportunity to say that I love that Id has been listening to the fans and doing stuff like the official Mod support for Doom Eternal which is HUGE given the amount of manpower needed to bring that to the masses and the industry hasn't done anything this big since Crysis and that is no small task, this is really big but it seems only bad news seem to sell so it is sad that most people are not covering this development.
It is as criminal as sleeping on Half-Life 3 eventually being released, most people should be aware of this change.

The Heretic and Hexen re-release is also big given we are getting both games at once with QoL features in a single package and for old boomers like me who played the games back then... I am over the moon. I was having a blast yesterday playing co-op and talking to newer and older players alike, Hexen with co-op feels so right and this was something that was not possible back in the day, it feels almost like a new game.
Loving the new soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult.

I have not had the chance to try the new episodes yet but given Nightdive and Id track record with Quake and Doom, it must be spectacular.
Legacy of Rust was incredible, what an ending.
