1) I started "discovering" creatures, rocks, and plants with my scanner. I see that "Sharky_c" has already discovered nearly everything on the starting world four years ago. However, I then found three that he missed. How does that happen? Was there really nobody in the last four years who would scan stuff besides me?

1) He/she may not have stayed on the planet very long.
2) Some fauna/flora/minerals are somewhat hard to find...some incredibly difficult to find.

2) Speaking of scanning, I read online that I can rename and upload my discoveries and that they'll be viewed that way by anyone who "rediscovers" them after me. "Sharky_c" hasn't renamed anything though. Is that normal? Or do the renames only show up for the discoverer, and everyone else just sees the original, auto-generated name? That's going to make a big difference on my renames!

Renaming things isn't on everyone's priority list. If you discover something by scanning it, it takes a few seconds. In order to rename something, you have to go into the menus, find the discovery, click to rename, type in the name, submit it...and hope something doesn't attack you during the process. I'd venture to guess that most people who have played for any length of time haven't bothered naming everything on a planet unless they plan to stay a while. In the early-game, those nanites and units you get as rewards are important, but in late game, not so much.

3) While exploring, I see other ships fly past me overhead. I thought I was playing solo though. Are those other ships just ambient effects? Or are they actually other players?

The game can be configured to play multi-player, and I believe it does start that way by default. You COULD see another player. However, unless you're looking for one, odds are slim that you actually saw one. Those are probably NPC's. Pro-tip: If you follow them, they will lead you to a point of interest. However, they AREN'T just ambient effects. If you shoot one, it will shoot back. And it may call in friends. And it will NOT give up until one of you is dead.
